And I receive more timely advice! Tried to do my own roller furling research before these posts. Seems that the Schaeffer Pro Furl series was a hands down favorite of Practical Sailor. Would that series be appropriate for a CD30????? Talk to me!!!

Maintenance Free!- Is There Such A Thing?!?

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Just something more in the manner of an "observation". Someone mentioned that some of the furler systems use Torlon and are therefore "maintenance free". There are many pieces of equipment for marine use that are billed as maintenance free. After a few years of sailing in a salt water/ salt spray/ salt air environment, I don't believe that there is ANYTHING that is maintenance free. Even if it just means occasionally hosing the parts down with fresh water, you have to do something. Just about any equipment you have, especially if it has moving parts, has to be cleaned and inspected periodically and usually lubricated. I don't care what it is. So take that into consideration when deciding what to buy. I've heard only good things about the Schaefer system. I myself have a Furlex and its terrific. My mast is down and it takes me about 3 minutes a year to grease the system.

Torlon Bearings........Harken states right in their......

.......material that The Torlon bearings (and races) must be washed out regularly. Easily done with fresh water and a hose on the lower bearings. But what about at the mast head ??? Is the rain sufficient to do that?? Some say yes, but then why would Harken bother to mention washing at all if the rain was sufficient to wash out the top bearings wouldn't it suffice on the lowers?? Oh dear dear what a quandry !!!
Now which way was I facing?? N, E, S, W ?? I've lost my bearings again.....

Hard to go wrong with any of the main companies at this point...main thing is to get a unit sized properly for your boat...go slightly bigger if you can. I did a fair amount of research before going with a Harken on my CD27, but by no means do I claim this to be superior to any of the others....I have just had great luck with Harken equipment and had a furler on my Quickstep that worked flawlessly. Just as important, probably, to get the thing properly installed. Any of them will cause you problems if not set up right...I had Jeff Anderson from Anson Sails in New Hampshire do mine when I purchased a new genny from him....did a nice job. Wish I could have rigged it myself, but just didn't dare. Got my money's worth, I think, in view of my lack of mechanical ability....Good luck!
