THE Race......a NEW course......
All Captains Commanding,
Please print this message, it is long!
It appears Sirs, that not many Captains were impressed with the previously proposed "Horseshoe Reef" course, mostly because of the time it would take to get to/from the course from the Watch Hill area. During the Winter meeting, some Captains suggested a race from the area North of Plum Gut.
The race would occur as the fleet leaves Shelter Island and would start after it passes through Plum Gut. I don't know the date of THE race yet as the whole schedule is up in the air. If the proposed course is followed, immediately after crossing the finish line, the fleet may proceed up Little Narragansette Bay to the anchorage in Napatree Harbor. Dinner ashore would occur that evening at the Watch Hill Inn, with award presentations and other Grog induced Tom Foolery! The following day would be a lay day in Napatree Harbor, this would allow all Captains to report aboard Hanalei for a glass of Port with the triumphant Captain!!!!!(sorry, just had to throw that in there!)and allow visiting of all vessels and shopping/beach walking/swimming activities ashore.
The start would be a pursuit as it was last year, time would be maintained by GPS, and there will be NO protests!
Having reviewed the charts of the area, I respectfully submit the following as THE course to be followed:
After passing through Plum Gut, heading of 048 degrees magnetic takes the Fleet to the starting line that is defined by:
Bartlett Reef(North end of the starting Line)Fl 4s 28ft. and
R "4" (South end of the starting line)Fl R 4s Bell at 41 degrees 15.6', 71 degrees 58.4'. Pass between these two marks and proceed approx. 6.7 nm to:
Seaflower Reef, Fl 4s 28ft (pass to starboard). Proceed approx. 2.8 nm to:
Ram Island Reef R "20" at 41 degrees 18.2', 71 degrees 58.4'(pass to Port) Proceed approx. 1.8 nm to the finish due North of:
Latimers Reef Lighthouse Fl 6s 55ft Bell (pass to Starboard).
This course is approximately 11.3 nm in length and will encompass two different tidal flows/currents, and navigation that could be demanding depending on wind conditions. If the wind is SW, the race will be almost entirely a broad reach, we will see how fast these Cape Dory's really are! But, tide/currents and tactics will be a concern.
After crossing the finish line, all vessels will proceed to the anchorage at Napatree and an awards dinner at the Watch Hill Inn.
All Captains Commanding, very quickly, I need to know how many Captains and crew will be attending the dinner ashore(whether you plan to race or not) in Watch Hill, I must make reservations for the dining space ASAP.
Please pull out your charts, plot the course, and give me your comments. I remain,......your most HUMBLE.....servant.......

R "4" Fl R 4s Bell is at 41 degrees 15.6' and 72 degrees 08.3', NOT 71 degrees 58.4'! Sorry,D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: All Captains Commanding,

Need date
Sounds interesting, but who can commit without knowing the date? For that matter, how can you book the room if you don't know the date?

Re: THE Race......a NEW course......
Cappy Stump,
Man do you have a lot of titles!!!!!!!
On first read and examination of chart, I think it looks good. BUT why not just start as we're flying out of the GUT, making our first mark R"4". I realize that this assumes that all racers would be at Shelter Island, therein lies the problem with that. Maybe you can't make it to Shelter Island and therefore will miss the RACE, oh TOO BAD !!!!!!
Otherwise I like it, ending at Watch Hill is nice, good anchorage, and I'd love to have you over to Macht Nichts to celebrate the win!!!! ( My win that is :_) ) You must defer to the fleet Captain at all times !!!!!
From what you told me at the infamous Northeast Meeting, you've found a place to hold dinner and awards, from what I remember it sounded very nice and reasonable!!!!
As to the date, Looks like 8/04,8/05 or 8/06, depending upon how the time line shakes out. We are working on that now, and should be nailing it down within a few days. Plenty of time to book events and make plans!!!!
You go Dave!!!!!!
Thanks for being Race Committee Chair, Napatree Anchorage Chair, and as always the Nautical Traditions Officer. You did a great job with the Changing of Command Ceremony!!!!!

Re: Reason for proposed start line...
Fleet Captain Heintz,
The reason for picking Bartlett Reef as the starting line is: 1. Not all vessels will be at Shelter Island, and 2. The area of the start will allow a lot of seaway for vessels to stand on and off (or heave to) waiting for the remainder of the fleet to arrive. When all vessels are assembled, the base time can be determined and the different sizes of CD's will start according to PHRF handicap.
When you say 8/4, 5, or 6, when will the fleet be coming through Plum Gut? ie. if it is the 4th, dinner will be that evening AFTER the race, and if the 5th. then dinner on the 5th. etc. So, lay day could be the 5th. or 6th. You pick it Sir, after the rest of the time line is determined. But, I would suggest the 5th., as that is a Monday, and Napatree will be almost empty and Watch Hill reservations should be correspondingly easier to obtain.
Also, vessels such as Typhoons could launch at Pleasure Beach Boat ramp in Waterford, CT and participate in the race all the way to Latimers Reef lighthouse. Might be exciting for them!
