Houston, We Have A Problem Here
What is that white stuff that is falling out of the sky?
Oh well, I guess we need some every few years.

Re: Houston, We Have A Problem Here
Do you live out on the east coast Ken? I have been watching the progress of a large one headed up the eastern seaboard. Amazing how much 'white junk' these things cause you folks. You have some truly incredible storms in the winter..ice and snow. So, is your boat out of the water and covered, or do you stow her wet for the winter? (that would be SO tempting to me). What do you guys do when there is an ice storm in the marina? Gotta get the ice off somehow, but I remember Tristan Jones encounter with falling ice from his rigging while he was knocking it off with a pole..took his eye out, which he eventually put back in but it never worked right after that (didn't track when you moved from side to side). How _do_ you handle ice storms?
Well stay warm and keep your distance from the bumper ahead.

Re: Houston, We Have A Problem Here
Larry,
We are in Raleigh, NC, about 150 miles from the boat which is in Beaufort, NC at ICW milepost 200. The storm is leaving all this beautiful white stuff here, but it is supposed to be sleeting in Beaufort tonight.
We store wet and worry a little. I understand the marina has had a skim of ice on it, but in the last two years I think there has been no ice above the waterline. The 10-day weather prediction is pretty favorable for Beaufort, so I expect whatever this storm leaves behind will be melting very quickly. See the link below. For an hourly archive, check out the weather station at Pt. Lookout:
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNC0048
Today the ocean water temp is about 60 degrees F, so it isn't going to stay cold very long!
This snow thing is so infrequent that they interview people who waste money on snow shovels. A friend from church was interviewed on the local news this evening. We can be totally confounded by a 12" snow because they don't plow, it gets wet and freezes, and then you can't get up the slight hills in the subdivisions without a 4X4. We can take a week to recover from such a storm!
However, we are prepared to Keep on Sailing, all year long!

I just wanted to go sailing in the snow yesterday. Really big flakes & a 10k breeze. My company closed when the first flake was seen, but Atlanta is like that.Ken Coit wrote: What is that white stuff that is falling out of the sky?

At midnight last night there was maybe 1/8" of ice on my deck (sleet). This a.m. it was gone. Windy and in the fortys - in all a kind of rotten day but things will get better as soon as this front passes. Guess we need some of this stuff to keep us honest.
Both CD's at my dock riding well but the water is up maybe a foot from the wind.
Fire in the fireplace, parts of the boat to refurbish (making a new wooden boathook with a bronze tip), and nothing to go outside for.
Thought I'd pass this along so you wouldn't worry about Parfait in this nasty weather we're having on the coast.
There's a Dark and Stormy waiting for you at M & M's. Better come collect it.

Re: Houston, We Have A Problem Here
Cap'n Andy,
I am looking forward to that Dark and Stormy. Will I be able to drive after that?
I like the intensity with which you are approaching the storm: "Fire in the fireplace, parts of the boat to refurbish (making a new wooden boathook with a bronze tip), and nothing to go outside for." We are looking at 6 1/2" of white stuff with more falling as I type. I hear we are to get a couple more inches. If it hovers around freezing, then Raleigh will be rather quiet for the next several days except for the noise of tires on ice as they scream for compassion.
The birds are delighted to be in our yard. Not only are the vittles sumptuous, but we have heavy Holly cover for them. We received quite a flock of Robins the other day. I guess they got caught in a squeeze play and decided that this was the best of a bad deal. We have even had a pair of red-winged black birds; they prefer open spaces so that was surprising. I guess Fran cleared out more of our little forest than I thought.
I'm going to investigate the makings of a "Dark and Stormy"; maybe they would go well with a fire this evening.
Thanks for the weather report. Keep on sailing and caressing that boathook.

Re: Houston, We Have A Problem Here
You fellas in the southern Cape Dory Fleets need to venture north for a little good weather. My snowblower still has dust on it from a year's disuse! Dry as a bone up here on Long Island! I may as well enjoy it while it lasts, as I'm sure the tables will be turned in short order! Although its dry here, its finally turned cold. I was out on my dock, behind my house on New Years Day putting the Ice Eater propeller in. My inlet iced up (very thin ice) that night. A storm is due to come up the east coast this weekend, getting to New York probably late Sunday. If it stays out over the warm waters of the Atlantic, we'll get rain. If it takes the more westerly inland route, the dust may come off the snowblower after all. Say Andy...How does Oriental look in the snow?

Cap'n Ken,
Should the power go out I will simply move aboard Rhiannon where there are all the comforts "off the grid."

Dark and Stormy makings: one part Gosling's Black Seal Dark Rum, two parts Stewart's Ginger Beer, twist of lime -- the national drink of Bermuda. They serve these to you in milkshake cups at the St. George YC after the Annapolis-to-St. George race while the skipper is ashore clearing customs. After a couple of these one tends to forget the trials and tribulations of the last five days at sea.Ken Coit wrote: I'm going to investigate the makings of a "Dark and Stormy"; maybe they would go well with a fire this evening.
My young lady friend is on the way from RTP since they cut her loose from her job until Monday because of the snow. I will be able to focus attention on something other than the boathook when she arrives! Re: Dark and Stormy
Andy,
Sorry to hear your lady friend isn't there already. In our mind's eye, we had you cuddled up together in front of the fire working on that boat hook.
I did find some recipes for Dark 'n Stormy. Always did like rum and Stewart's ginger beer. I'll have to mix them together and practice before I get to Oriental.
Enjoy the snow, sleet, rain, and ice. Spring is just around the corner.
