V-Drive Service Info Needed

Post by Larry McAnally »

I need to know the type of oil to use in my V-drive. I have a 1979 Volvo MD7 in a CD30. Also any other info on servicing the drive would be appreciated.
My Volvo Penta manual makes no mention of the V-drive.
I am enjoying and benefitring very much from this board.
thanks

Larry,

Use straight 30 wgt. automotive oil in it. That is what the manual calls out for, and I have done so for 12 years now, with no problems. (Same as I use for the engine lube, which makes it handy, since I then buy a 2 gallon container of 30 weight (CD4 rated). I would recommend changing that oil once a year, to get rid of metal particles that get cleaned off the gears, as well as the oxidation of the old oil..both of which will turn the oil dark brown in color over time. The reverse gear also gets the same oil. Be very careful to not overfill the reverse gears case, as expansion of the oil due to heat will cause the seal on the shift linkage where it enters the case to fail and leak oil.

Cheers,

Larry De
Thanks for the info. I can complete the service. And thanks for the caution on overfill. I hate it when I cause more problims than I fix.

Walter V Drive Manual

Post by Olli Wendelin »

Larry,

I assume you have a Walter V Drive. It uses 30 weight motor oil. I found their manual on line some years ago and copied it. I will e-mail you the manual. If anyone else needs it just send me an e-mail.
