Where to get prop shaft shorten?

Post by Larry Austin »

Can anybody recommend a place in Connecticut that can shorten my prop shaft? I am installing a drivesaver disk and want to get the shaft shorten the same thickness as the disk.

Thank You.

Captain Austin,

I would think that any machine shop could tackle this job. If they have a lathe, they could do it. I would not look for a "MARINE" machine shop, that will cost you a fortune. I'd look in the yellow pages. FWIW......

If you feel like doing it yourself, my experience with angle grinders with cut off blades leads me to believe you can cut it and, if need be, grind it square enough. Alternatively, most metal shops or suppliers ought to be able to cut it with a bandsaw-like device.

Keep on sailing,

Ken

I'm curious where you found a drivesaver that fits under the V-drive(or does the MKII not have a v-drive?). I looked long and hard for one earlier this summer.

Not only do you have to shorten the shaft, you most likley will have to re-machine the keyway. I used to deal with a wonderful machine shop in ESSEX (THE MACHINE SHOP AT ESSEX or ESSEX MACHINE. They have moved to New London under the I-95 Bridge. The owner, John Johnson, also owns the yacht club property and the ships chandlery in ESSEX so they will be easy to find. Good Luck!
