Incredible Storm on Superior -Pictures

Post by Larry DeMers »

Hey folks, check this URL out. We had two days of snow fall and enormous waves on Superior. Here is what happened in Duluth at the Lift Bridge Entry. I have walked this pier probably 100 times in my life, and never ever have the waves flooded the pier out. The water level is normally 15-20 ft. below the cement pier edge..but it is apparently almost over it in this Northeaster caused Seiche Tide. It has the NWS going to the books for a similar event..
Cheers!~

Larry,
Unbelievable pictures. I remember posting to you last year about the "gales of November" on Lake Superior. Just such a late November gale did in the Edmund FitzGerald off Whitefish Point! I remember writing to you last year about that. Boy! You can set your watch by the late November gales on Superior! Did you get much snow out of this? I saw on the news that some of the areas in your neck of the woods got a couple of feet. If it keeps up like this DLM will have snow up to the toerails. Say Larry. Can DLM float in snow? HA!

Hi Warren,

Boy..we lucked out and missed the worst of it by 29 miles. We got 5 inches, but just a teenie 29 miles away, they had 7 ft. snowdrifts and 35 in. on the ground in 1 days snow fall! They were getting 2in./hr. for a long time. The boat is snowed under..well drifted over is what Al, our marina owner says..the snow is Over the darn rail! hee, incredible.

Last year, we did not need the ladder to get aboard for the first two weekends..just made a ramp up the slope of snow and climbed aboard. We could not even see where we tied the the cover to the cradle or went under the boat for instance. That was kinda unique..had to crawl thru the stern ladder area, over the ropes holding our masts crutches in place (can you picture this..a big old fa*t like me trying to thread his 250 lbs thru that hole..heh).

Now realize how fast things changed here. The storms were Monday and Tuesday primarily. Friday previous, I was out in shirt sleeves, raking the yard, and painting some shelves for our restaurant. It was a good 60 deg. out. Wow..I love nature and weather. What a powerful force to respect, but to admire too. I get a kick out of it like hardly any other..well there IS sailing, and I suppose close order drill with the crew etc..etc..heh..

Take care captain,

Larry

I don't know if I've got a browser problem, but "what pictures?" I don't see any link, despite the link symbol in the directory.
