Appears the rudder on Ty 19 #775 has begun to seperate from the stem at the top of the rudder. Looks like there is a pin from stem shaft into the rudder body that has corroded away. Rudder is still attached
on down the remainder of the stem, but is loose at the top of the rudder where I can see dayight between stem and rudder when I gently pull aft on the rudder.
Question: 1.) What is a good fix for this condition?
2.) How in the heck do you get the stem out of the
thruhull?

I've got the same problem with Hull #691. I tried cleaning and epoxy but after a good day of sailing the problem was back. I'm now thinking of some type of strap that wraps around the rudder post and is thru-bolted to the rudder. The lower portion seems secure so maybe one strap on the upper section will work.
A new rudder is not on the "need" list.

I'm now thinking of some type of strap that wraps around the rudder post and is thru-bolted to the rudder. The lower portion seems secure so maybe one strap on the upper section will work.
A new rudder is not on the "need" list.

bristol bronze might be able to help with some bronze straps.
otherwise it's hoist the boat up enough to drop the rudder or dig a hole deep enough to do so. there is a shoe at the bottom aft end of the keel (glassed-in) that accepts the bottom of the rudder shaft. this has to be removed first. not having done rudder surgery, i assume you would have to do as other rudder repairs go - either saw the thing in half vertically to expose the shaft and the tabs welded to the shaft or remove enough rudder to expose the tabs and then reglass the whole thing. a project no matter how you look at it!!

Yes, the bottom 7/8's is solid. At least a strap would stabilize it and keep it on the boat. Thanks for the response. From the other reply, it sounds like a major undertaking just to pull the stem muchless do the rudder work. I'm a trailer-sailor so it will be easy to get to anyway. Tnx, again.
