Cleaning aluminum mast

Post by Jill Geary »

I'm working on cleaning our unpainted Typhoon mast (it is off the boat). Any proven tips? I've been told to be careful with aluminum cleaners as they eventually turn the mast black. Some pitting and corrosion are evident, but mainly I want to clean/polish the aluminum and leave it unpainted. Thanks....

Hi, there! Best thing: once you have the mast down, wash it thoroughly with mild soap and water, trying to take all the pitting and corrosion off. then wax it, three, four times over. that's the best, and all you need! Good luck.

I used Penetrol with immediately noticable results. Follow the directions. It's my first time doing so. The end of the season will tell the story.
