20in. Shaft too short for CD25 Outboard?

I am in the process of buying a replacement outboard for my CD25. The main motor I am considering is the Yamaha 8HP Long Shaft (20inch). I like this motor a great deal from experience on other boats. The Yamaha dealer however thinks that the 20 inch shaft may be too short for a CD25 causing the cooling water intake to come out of the water. Although there has been a lot of discussion of CD25 outboards on this site, few posts specify the shaft length used. Does anyone out there use a 20 inch shaft engine (especially the Yamaha 8)? Do I really need a 25 inch, extra long shaft engine?

I just purchased a Yamaha 6 shortshaft for my Typhoon Senior. The Ty Sr weight is 3300lbs vs. 4000lbs of CD25. Because of the motor position in the motorwell, Alberg's hull design and weight, I have had no problems with the 6 ss. I don't know this to be true but somewhere I heard that Alberg designed these boats to use shortshaft motors. Also, my Yamaha dealer sold me the ss with the understanding that I could try it and return the motor for a longshaft if I wasn't satisfied. Incidently, I replaced a Yamaha 8 ls with the new 6. After I changed to a dualthrust prop, the 6 pushed "Grace" at hull speed with half-throttle. At full throttle the engine produces a rolling wave wake to stern. The 6ss seems to actually perform better under power than 8ls. I think you will find the 8 ss an excellent motor. The dualthrust prop is well worth the $60-80 cost when reverse thrust is important. Remember, a good dealer should have no problem letting you try any engine and return it immediately for a exchange. Mine held my check and title papers until I called him which was the same day. I use a Yamaha 8HP Long Shaft on my CD 25. I bought the engine used, but I do not believe it's the extra long shaft version. I'm not sure of the dimensions of the shaft, but I have not experienced any difficulties. It has plenty of power, even in rough conditions, and is incredibly reliable.
