CD25 furler

Post by Dan Hanlon »

Just read your responses to Mike B's question about the CDI. I have a couple of general ?s. Will the CDI and others work with the original hanked on genny? Is reefing possible or is it all or nothing? What do you gents recommend?

Nope. No furler works with a hanked on sail. They all have are slotted for a luff rope.

>>Is reefing possible or is it all or nothing?<<

You can roll up as much or as little of the sail as you want. The sail loses its shape as you reef, though, so there are limits.

I've sailed for five years with a CDI furler, without incident or complaint.

Dont forget you need weather protection on the new sail. To put on the luff tape and weather protection cost me over 500 on our 34ft hunter. By the way, we have a cdi furler and love it.

Highly recommend CDI but will have to install #6 luff tape in place of hanks. For what it's worth, we purchaced a North 150% Genoa with their rope luff option. This is a series of different lenght ropes placed in a luff pocket instead of the foam luff commonly used to retain sail shape. Can't believe how good it works, the sail keeps it shape and is quite effecient furled to 100% . Have used it furled to storm jib size when it really starts blowing. Not a substitue for a hanked on storm jib but It's performance impressed me.

I just talked to a company in California that has a product called Superfurl. (search superfurl on google to find website) The product uses the existing forestay, has a swivel at top, a foil that installs around the existing headstay and a roller that attaches at the bottom. You remove hanks and install slides on your existing jib over the grommets. They say you can then raise and lower the sail using the halyard and slides and change out sails as easily as with a hanked on sail. Can also get better tension on the luff with halyard. Cost is about $1,000 for a CD25. I am looking into the system as I want the convenience of roller furling but want to be able to change out sails when racing. Has anyone seen or have experience with this system?
