scratches in gelcoat from haul out

After my much loved Typhoon was hauled out this week by the boatyard I noticed some pretty severe scratches and small gouges in the gelcoat from the sling they used.How do I determine if they're so deep that water will get through the gelcoat and damage the fiberglass below? What's the best repair if they're really deep and what's the best repair if it's only cosmetic? Thanks for the help.

I would recommend that you refer to Don Casey's "This Old Boat".

Mark....this has happened to me before and I insisted that the boatyard repair the gelcoat by a professional at their expense and to my satisfaction! NOW, I insist that they use new heavy duty polyerethane sheeting over the slings to prevent scratching from barnacles and dirt/grit from other dirty bottoms. When the yard changed management this became the practice instead of the exception so I didn't have to deal with it when I had my new CD30 hauled this year. Good Luck....and Be Firm!!!!
