Walt,
I got a "fickle finger" (or was it "itchy finger"?) message from the ISP saying I had already posted a message, but it didn't appear, so I guess I didn't post it after all. Maybe there is a race condition in the ISP software that needs to be ferretted out?
Thanks for all your help,
Ken Coit

Elusive bug in message board software
Yeah, Ken, there is some sort of race condition or something in there. Occasionally double copies of a message get posted. I have not been able to figure out why. I put in the itchy finger message in an attempt to flag it, but don't know if it is accurate or has helped. Seems to me I had the same experience as you. Probably I should just change the error message to log the occurrence instead, so I can see if it is really catching what I want to.Ken Coit wrote: I got a "fickle finger" (or was it "itchy finger"?) message from the ISP saying I had already posted a message, but it didn't appear, so I guess I didn't post it after all. If there are any Perl experts out there, I would be happy to have some help on this. Experienced CGI programmers only need apply - this is a pretty hairy script.

Rewrite time!!!
And its needed yesterday, w/ all the current functionality plus some.
Nahhh. Cannot blame code on users inadequacies. Anyway, it was not part of the original spec. Besides, who would want to write code when they could be sailing.

Re: Elusive bug in message board software
Walt,
This has happened to me several times. I will start a reply, someone will walk up and ask me a question so that I do not get back to the reply for a while. In the meantime someone else replies to the same post. When I get around to finishing my reply I get the itchy finger message. Hope this adds some information that is helpful.

I'm looking for the multiple post bug.
That may be helpful for the itchy finger message, but that's just something I put in to try to catch the real problem, which is the multiple post bug.
Has anyone noticed anything when they have had duplicate posts happen?

Re: just had one
I just responded to the response etc. 6 layers down on the response
chain. It did not post at first and so I Backed since I thought maybe I forgot to press the post my message button (its early)and posted it again. Still no post so I left it alone. A little while later I reloaded and both copies of my post appeared. Hope this helps track the gremlin
