Hello all,
I have removed all the teak(except toe rails) on our Ty Weekender in preperation for stripping and refinishing them.
I was wondering if anyone has had a particular product or technique that worked well for them? If so - would you care to share your experience?
TIA

Stripping and finishing Teak on Ty, what do you think?

Hi Sean,
I refinished the teak on my Ty with Cetol & IMO, it looked beautiful after I was all finished. Didn't take it off the boat like you though. Obviously, preparing the wood prior to application is key. I've seen it applied to wood that was prepared half-@ss & it really came out crummy.

Semco Teak Sealer
Hi Sean,
I tried the Cetol look, and was not happy with it, but I did like Semco Teak Sealer. Several shades are available. I did however have to do several maintainance coats during the summer, to keep it looking fresh.
Enjoy,
Chip

Last winter I removed all of the teak (except the toerail). I cleaned it first with teak cleaner and then began sanding. With a small palm random sander it went well, ending up with fine grit finish paper. I then applied West Marine Wood Pro and it looked ok but didn't even last the season. I resanded the wood this fall and applied Cetol Light. I like it fine, but I imagine that recoating will be an annual project.

Re: Stripping and finishing Teak on Ty, what do you think?
Refinishing teak is THE issue on the message board and there is no shortage of comments. So, I thought I'd toss my view into the mix. Last winter I redid all the teak on my CD25D, and I'm very pleased with the results. First, I cleaned the wood thoroughly with teak cleaner, then rescrubbed it with a mixture of trisodium phosphate, bleach, and detergent. Then I cleaned it again with teak cleaner. This was on good advice from a professional boat refinisher. As he said, the trick is to remove as much teak oil as possible so it can be restored with the finshing oil. After all this, I had the wood bleached out to a VERY light beige color. Second,I sanded the wood until it was smooth. The teak had been severely neglected so the surface was very irregular and places still had remaining patches of Cetol (this was the hardest part - getting that stuff off and out of the grain). As described in another message, I sanded with progressively finer papers and ended with a fine scotch brite pad. I then recleaned the teak to raise the grain fibers and open the pores of the wood. Third, I applied numerous coats of Deks Oil until the wood refused to soak up more oil. Deks Oil is a fish oil product that leaves a natural teak finish. I'm surprised it isn't mentioned much as it has a pleasant appearance and holds up very well. How well? After a summer of sitting in the sun, etc, I went over it one time in late August with teak cleaner and an application of Deks oil to touch up some light spots and places where the wood had been scuffed. Redoing the entire boat took me less time/effort than getting the old Cetol off just the cockpit coamings. The teak looks great. I anticipate that I will clean and reapply oil next spring for the coming year. The results are beautiful and the upkeep doesn't seem bad at all. Good luck.

Just my two cents worth, like so many others, I have the teak to refinish. I want the warm look of smooth, oiled teak, without the repeated use of teak oil. So this fall I am using Epifanes Matte, and the product is giving me the apperence I am looking for! Yesterday I finished a pair of teak combing boxes, in my TY daysailer, that look great! Just like a fresh coat of teak oil! One more coat today should do the trick for the year, and as the product claims, no sanding between coats! Any others with experince with Epifanes?

When you do the annual maintenance on the teak treated with Cetol light, what is the process? Do you need to roughen it up first with fine sandpaper?
