The time for new sails has come. I am drawn to the idea of tanbark sails, for the apperence. But have not had the opportunity to talk to anyone with experince with the type. Any insight, good or bad, is greatly appreciated. In my minds eye, if I paint my TY, a seagreen hull, offwhite deck, the darker sails would add to the charater of the boat. Thanks!

Sails Opinions?

Re: Sails Opinions?
Shelby,
Our CD32C has tanbark sails. They are very beautiful but very heavy. The tanbark cloth that Realization flies is 11 oz. tanbark Dacron. The only drawback is the added weight aloft which may also effect heel angle. You shouldn't need anything heavier then 7 oz. cloth for your Typhoon. If you can find a sailmaker who will make sails from 7 oz. tanbark Dacron, go ahead and purchase them, otherwise stick with white.
If you'd like to see what a Cape Dory with tanbark sails looks like while under full sail, visit my website at:

Re: Sails Opinions?
Sounds like you're trying to make your Typhoon into a Point Jude or Nimble. Just kidding, but they both look great, I've had both. My try contacting them for Sailmakers. I think my Nimble sails were from UK.

Re: Nice looking vessel, is she fast??
Shelby,
As Catherine has said, 11 0z. dacron of any size is much to heavy for a 32 foot vessel not even considering a Typhon. You will probably be able to get good sails in 6.5 oz. or even less. Try contacting Mack Sails in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Talk to Mr. Mack, and tell him what you are looking for(mention that I sent you). He was real helpful in designing/obtaining new sails for Hanalei and at the best price. Don't know what colors he has available as I would ONLY put the traditional white sails on a White Cape Dory hull! Mack Sails has a web site at macksails.com so you can get their 800 number there.

Re: Nice looking vessel, is she fast??
Dave,
As a matter of fact, she is pretty darned fast for a Cape Dory, even with those heavy sails. I wonder what she'd sail like with a brand new set of high tech, light weight carbon fiber sails?
