Stove black @ seasons end...

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

To all Captains Commandin',

Hanalei was put on the hard this Friday last at the port of Noank, CT. Inspection of her propeller re'ealed only a few tiny little barnacles. This remarkable result was ob'iously due to the slathering on of "Sto'e Black" at the beginning of the season and the fact of 'ery NATURAL and pure seawater in the Mystic Ri'er! (Unlike artificial water found in other co'es such as Greenwhich!). The prop nut zinc was no-existant! It was half 'one when she was launched last sprin' and this Captain didn't dive on her at all this year to replace it. I would suspect that the zinc was washed away as Hanalei crossed the finish line at Block Island this July last! ! Eight knots, and a little bit, over the bottom will do that! All-in-all it was a very good and prosperous year for Captain and Crew of Hanalei, many prizes were taken and much specie captured. Said specie will now be put to good use in re-equipping Hanalei for next seasons contests at sea! Also, the Armada finish looked great even after a whole season without attention of any kind. Captain Stump
Sounds like your experience with stove black is all positive. However, would you be kind enough to explain what keeps it on that spinning prop? I haven't used stove black, but everything I have used, i.e., bottom paint over primer, spins right off. The only thing that seems to stick are the barnicles.
By the way, long ago in a previous life, I kept my boat at wonderful little place called the Noank Ship Yard. I commuted from Hartford. I recall consuming many N.E. lobsters at a place called "Abbot's", . If you must live in NE, then Noank is the place to be. I now sail out of West Palm Beach, which has milder winters.
Thanks,

Captain Parker,

Arg, Matey and Noank Shipyard be the place were lays Hanalei for this winter next. It is much improved, new floating docks all over the place. We enjoy it...stop by if you are in the area next year.

Your missing zink may be the real reason you have so little fouling. I have noticed that healthy zinks increase fouling and I got no fouling when my zink was gone. Think it has something to do with copper ions from the bronze. Of course, the water (salinity, etc) is a big factor too. Maybe others can comment.

Scott,
I was told by one of the prop manufacturers at a recent boat show, that a small amount of electrolosis will keep the barnacles off the prop. Too much of course will cause damage. I don't know of a way to control the right amount.

Re: Possibly....

Captain Ritchey,

I had heard that a bronze prop would stay clean if there was a little electrolysis, but I don't know if this is the case with Hanalei. The prop doesn't appear degraded in any manner! And the ground plate did not appear red, in fact, it was a little fouled! She was launched last year with about 1/2 of the previous years zinc still there. I usually dive on her at least once a year to take a look at what's going on down there, and to replace the zinc, but this year I didn't. She went in on April 1st. and was pulled November 1st. So, 7 months! Did the zinc go away in 3.5 months, or did it last until just before pull out? Don't know, but, Hanalei has very little electrolysis going on at any rate. She is never hooked to shore power, except for some minor use first thing in the Spring for cleanup. So, I don't know if the stove black is what did it or what. But, at any rate, I think the stove black did help some, and will continue to use it. It's cheap, and seems to work for me....

Hanalei is just too fast!!

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Capt. Stump,

Methinks the stove black/ electrolysis theory is just to convoluted to be plausible. As #1 Hanalei proved at this year's mid summer festivities, her speed is a forced to be reckoned with. I believe Sir, you also mentioned that you sail virtually every weekend from April to November. Sailing that often, and with such blinding speed, methinks those barnicles never had a chance to even catch Hanalei much less attach to any part of her subwaterline anatomy. She was never in one place long enough to do the deed! All those barnicles saw was a blur as Hanalei shot by and the only telltale sign that she was even at their latitude was a wake akin to a sonic boom! I think if you get the new mainsail this winter as planned, you may be able to forego bottom paint next year! Ugh! And I have to race against that next year!

My new Perry nut was completely eaten away this year-- twice as bad as last year and I had very little prop fouling last year and a basketball's worth this year. Maybe we need to get a barnacle involved with this board to get a straight answer. Stove black seems to be tenaciously waxy -- perhaps that's the active ingredient.
