Un- Un, Steping the Ty Mast

Post by Robert M Paterson »

The recent question and discussion on the take down of the mast on the Ty would appear to be straight forward ,easy and quick to do.My question is addressed to early Ty owners that have there masts through steped to the hull, not tabernacel mounted on the couch roof.
The bronze plate on my Ty reads Alberg;Cape Dory Co ,373 Bridewater, Mass #27
Question? How do you step and unstep your mast? Also has anyone tabernacel mounted there mast, and inserted a compression post, and if so where can you purchase the tabernacel?
Your impute would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob P

Weekender vs Daysailer

Post by Serge Zimberoff »

Major difference between weekender and daysailer. It would be a major refit to convert. The weekender cabin top tabernacle often has the downward force transfered to the keel with a compression post, however that is not the only difference. Built into the cabin top is a major fiber glass box beam that takes lateral and twist forces from the tabernacle and directs them to other parts of the hull.
Add to that a different mast, the fact that weekender is a fractional rig etc. it would not be worth the expense.
