ADMIN: Happy Anniversary to Us - and a New Look
Well, here we are, five years later. It says at the top of the page that I am visitor number 532,847 since October 18, 1996. 30,000 odd messages, a very small number of flaps, a bunch of Cape Dory groups and fleets organized here, countless boat projects, a few glasses of wine ... what a great five years it has been.
Browsing through the archives - and I hope most of you have taken some time to do that - you will see that many of the messages, like our Cape Dory boats, are classics, their relevance and usefulness unworn by the passage of time. Below is a link to the first message posted on this board. It could have been posted yesterday.
Five years, and it's long past time for a few changes. In 1996 I called this the Cape Dory Information Exchange - an awkward mouthful and you've all been most kind not to complain about it. Because of all the people who have chosen to congregate here, this has indisputably become "the" on-line place for CD owners. So from now on this will be The Cape Dory Board.
Ken Cave asked about making this board the "official Cape Dory Association". Well, there are at least three official Cape Dory owners' groups, and I think they all use this board to organize events and to get together on line. Certainly CCDO and CDSOA do. So it's no longer appropriate for this page to belong to the California Cape Dory Owners Association alone.
Accordingly, you'll see a new navigation banner at the top of the message board, incorporating the logos of all three Cape Dory groups. A click will send you to the home pages of these groups. Also, the text at the top of the page has been changed to reflect the more universal nature of this board.
I hope everyone likes these changes. As always, this is just a place in cyberspace - it's the people that meet here who make it what it is.
Thanks to all,
Walt Bilofsky, Webmaster

Hearty Thanks (& congratulations)
When I first began to use this site, I felt a bit like Blanch Dubois ("...depended upon the kindness of strangers."). With the passage of time--the stangeness has eroded--we have become shipmates.
Thank you for all of your time & effort (& occasional censorship), they have made this site the primary source for those of us who love our Cape Dorys.
A TOAST TO YOU!

Re: Hearty Thanks (& congratulations)
Without question, I would not own a Cape Dory today if this board had not been here, rich with information, insight and encouragement for new owners.
Mystic Marine is proud to have helped a few owners to refit their Cape Dorys, and while we don't make any money at it, it makes coming to work a little more fun.
Work is fun and I own a sailboat. Cheers to you, Walt.

Re: ADMIN: Happy Anniversary to Us - and a New Look
Walt and Catherine,
I like the new look and the convenience of getting to the various CD organizations. It would also be a convenience if there were a small frame that included links to the purveyors of items important to Cape Dorians. There must be twelve of them who would be happy to give us $100 a year for posting.
I do agree that we don't want pop-ups and a lot of other advertising gimmicks, so if they aren't going to be happy with a simple link, then we ought to do something else. As I said privately, I am willing to contribute if there is no other support available from advertising or the national organizations.
Keep up the good work!
Ken

"Hats Off!"
Walt,
Since the purchase of our first Cape Dory 4 years ago, this Board has the been the destination of my daily internet surfing. The Board is my therapy when I can't get to the boat, if I need to seek advise for something on the boat, or if I just need a few minutes away from the "regular job."
It has been a wonderful privilege to be able to access the wealth of information here. On occaision, I have tried to share with other Cape Dory Sailors my own suggestions and ideas.
To the finest group of internet sailors, "Thanks for the experience."
To Walt... Three cheers to the man behind the best the site on the internet! May everyday for you be a Cape Dory Day!

Another Cheer for Walt
It's been a long time, in cyperterms, and I visit almost every day. You have made my Cape Dory boating experience much more exciting. I fly the burgee proudly and have used many of the hints to make the 1988 CD28FB POWER perform like she was brand new.
Keep it up

Thanks for all the support. But please also thank Assistant Webmaster Catherine Monaghan. She has been responsible for essentially all the improvements in the content of the web site over the past year or two - additions to the <a href="http://www.toolworks.com/capedory/ccdoi ... cification pages, creating the page of boat owners' web sites, and much more.
Thanks, Catherine

Re: And Three Cheers for Catherine
Of course Catherine!!! An error of omission and nothing more. The two of you in making this page what it is along with our fellow Cape Dorians are responsible for my salvation. Of the 500,000+ hits so far I am conservatively responsible for at least 150,000 of them!! With my boat going on the hard, this page "gives me hope" when there's 8 inches of snow outside my window and the inlet behind my house is frozen. I even welcome the southern boys complaining that there was no wind for sailing in the middle of February! So my hat is tipped to both of you. Masterful job!Walt Bilofsky (Webmaster) wrote: Thanks for all the support. But please also thank Assistant Webmaster Catherine Monaghan. THANK YOU!!
Hi Walt,
Thank you for your time and efforts on behalf of all Cape Dories and their skippers. You have done us an enormous service!!
As Bob O. mentioned, since finding this board I have learned a lot about my boat and occasionally contributed (although not as profusely & accurate as Cathy
)
I found out about the Onset 99 Rendezvous on this board, put together the meeting that lead to the "NE Fleet", CDSOA, Inc., and with Cathy’s able assist, spread the word for our first Rendezvous, "Cape Dory Rendezvous 2000". The NE Fleet has grown from 10 founding boats to a nats-a__ under 100 memberships from the resulting fallout 'advertising' on this board. Al off this would not have happen without your “CCDO Bulletin Board”.
If you get east for another or our Rendezvous, your dinner is on me.
Fair Winds,
Leo MacDonald
NE Fleet Captain, CDSOA, Inc. (Cathy makes sure I put add the "Inc.")

There's nothing else I can add to the kudos that hasn't already been said, but feel I would be remiss if I did't acknowledge how much I've benefited from this board. My hat is off to all.

As official visitor #500,000, I agree. I offer a million thanks to Walt and Catherine, as well as to all of the colorful frequenters of this site. My sailing experiences have been greatly enriched through the advice and wisdom freely offered here. The recent improvements to and organization of the Board ensure a continuation of the best the Net has to offer.
3 Cheers!!!

Thanks for all you have done. You may us folks hear on the 3rd Coast feel more at home. Word is we may soon have a Gulf Coast organization focused around the Galveston Bay area. I will make sure you are kept up-to-date. Who knows, perhaps another banner at the top.
