I am a newbie trying to decide on which CD 28 to buy.
One choice is a 1987 28' CD open fisherman with 210 HP cummins diesel model 6BT 5.9. (20"x19" four bladed prop.) The other choice is a 1985 28' Hard Top with a 165 HP Volo diesel turbo charged. (Three bladed prop.)
Both CD look to be in great shape.
Does anyone know what I can expect for a realistic cruising speed on each of these boats? (A sea trial on both would be expensive.)
Also, the cummins was removed and painted (and serviced) in 1998. The Volvo is two years older and the engine paint was in great shape. Why would someone paint the engine?
Thanks for any help you can provide. I look forward to being a CD owner soon.

Re: CD 28' Powerboat Cruising Speed - Search the Archives
For speed, the extra horsepower will be important. The hull is semi-displacement. On my 30 (with twin 200 hp Volvos), every extra bit of weight, like filling fuel or water tanks, eats up speed.Jack de Raismes wrote: One choice is a 1987 28' CD open fisherman with 210 HP cummins diesel model 6BT 5.9. You will find lots of information in the archives on this. I searched on "power", then refined the search with "speed", then "28".Jack de Raismes wrote: Both CD look to be in great shape.

Check my post and Art's in this thread. Art talks about a CD repowered with a Cummings - maybe the same boat? I talk about speeds.

Good luck.

Re: CD 28' Powerboat Cruising Speed
Many machine shops routinely respray engines when they do rebuilds. That, plus the fact that it was removed at all, suggests that the Cummins was rebuilt, not merely "serviced." This is good news if it was done right. Maybe the owner or broker can provide receipts or at least the name of the shop that did the work.
