Boat Transporter

Post by Kirk Hill »

can anybody recommend a trucking company that seems to have resonable
rates? I would like to move a CD 30 in RI south to a warmer climate.
Possibly Norfolk. Also then looking for reasonable rates in that area
or a little further south for storage on the hard.

Kirk,

Reasonable rates are not the whole story. What you need is the least trouble, end-to-end. There are several transporters that advertise in the usual rags and on the web. We used Triton Marine in Oriental, NC to haul Parfait from Orange Beach, AL to Oriental. They were a CD dealer. Paul Welles, Jr. did the hauling himself, so you aren't dealing with the bottom end of the staff.

When we moved Parfait, we used a yard to do the hard prep work, like pulling and wrapping the mast, I did the easy packing and taping, and the hauler got her settled onto the special transport trailer. On arrival in Oriental, NC, the hauler / yard did the launching and mast stepping, and I did the remainder of the re-commissioning. We had no transport problems, but I recommend being present for the entire process to at least be able to offer advice about what you want or don't want.

If you are looking for a place to sail a CD with a longer season than RI, I recommend NC.

As for price, you will probably do well to be patient and wait until someone can come up with a potential dead head going south, so that the hauler is not trying to make a profit on a one-way transport. My guess is that you might have to wait until Spring, but maybe in the current climate, there are haulers just waiting to do anything to keep staff employed and cash flowing.

Check out Triton, they did a good job for me. See the link below.

Come on South, the weather is fine! If you do decide to come this way, we can give you some additional ideas on where you might find storage on the hard; Oriental is a good place to start, but there are many other yards between there and Beaufort, NC.

Try Brownells in Mattapoisett. They have a stellar reputation.

Consider Oriental, NC, the sailing capitol of NC. Try Triton Yacht Sales for hauling. sales@tritonyachts.com
