Cape Dory rudder question

Post by Jim Leininger »

I've just purchased, and begun reconditioning, CD25 #21 (formerly Sea Cloud, from San Diego). My son tells me he has a friend (retired boat broker) who told him Cape Dory's are prone to losing their rudders. Anybody ever heard of this?
I would appreciate any info. Thanks!!

P.S. Has anyone ever tried a small end plate (wing) on the bottom of the rudder? I've read of people reducing weather helm (dramatically) on several types/designs of boats. I plan to build one from fiberglass and epoxy, and try it. If it works, I'll let you know.....if it doesn't, I'll never speak of it again!

Carl Alberg rethought it

When Richard Henderson spoke with Carl Alberg for a book Henderson was writting on classic sailing yachts ( I forget the title; the book is in my weekend home. I'll post the title this weekend.)Henderson asked Alberg for a line drawing of the Triton. Since Pearson still owned the rights, Alberg was unable to provide the originals, but had a solution. He redrew the Triton as a "mark 2" design, and added improvments drawn from experience with the boat. Alberg drew the rudder with a extended lower segment. It then looked like a right angle triangle with the right angle at the lower aft end of the rudder. Alberg said it would reduce the weather helm. email me an address, and I'll send some photocopies of this stuff to you.
Good luck
Bill

If I am not mistaken, Carl Alberg did not design the CD 25...the people at Cape Dory designed it.

CD25 designed by George Stadel

You're almost right. The CD25 was originally the Allied Greenwich 24 designed by George Stadel.

Should have mentioned this earlier, but the way I cured the excessive weather helm in my Ty was to buy new sails to replace the blown out originals.

That is doubfull. One of the things about a Cape Dory is they don't have those problems because of the way the rudder is mounted. He must be thinking of some other boat.
