I need advice. I need to replace an 1976 Yanmar 12 on my CD30, hull # 9. My trusted marine mechanic in Annapolis thinks my options are very limited due to size, shape and positioning on engine compartment.
Any ideas? Also, one option would be to switch to Atomic IV. Please share your opinions with me.

I do not think substituting a gas engine for a diesel is a good economic idea in terms of potential resale. The Yanmar is a good engine and is available new as a 9 hp or 18 hp. The 18 has fresh water cooling standard and I would recommend it for your hull. The 12 hp probably was a little small for a 30' hull.Rick Schwitzer wrote: I need advice. The cost of a rebuilt A-4 is around 3K while the Yanmar is about 5K.
The A-4 will also be heavier and you do not need the weight in the stern of the boat.

Re: Re-Powering 1976 CD30
I just purchased a 1980 CD27 which was re-powered about 10 years ago with a Yanmar 2GM20F 2 cyl diesel. That model is rated 16hp at 3400 and 18 hp at 3600. I'm not sure if the newer Yanmar is exactly the same rating but I am sure it's close. This engine provides the 27 with ample power, and I'm sure it would be fine for the 30. As far as space, I am not familiar with the engine compartment in the CD30, but logic would dictate that there is at least as much or more room than in the 27. Best of luck. :
