Retiring the Battle Ensign

Retiring the Battle Ensign
As we bagged our sails today, lowered our flags, and set about preparing "Alphee" to go in Ordinary - and subsequently on the hard this next week, for the wintah - we noted with sorrow, and yet resolute pride, the wind's decimation of our beautiful CDSOA burgee!
She flew proudly all summer, carried aloft on many lone missions away from the CDSOA Fleet and its Derring-Do's, shewing the True Way hither and yon amongst the flotsam of unseemly, bathtub-like clorox bottles pretending to be sailing vessels! Many of them cast an uncomprehending eye upon the fine burgee, the empyrean nature of the CD fraternity/sorority escaping so many lesser vessels -
And yet!
From time to time, hailing a fellow CD along the way, we saw the flash of recognition and joy of shared triumphs and experiences which only a CD in its infinite seaworthiness can bring to its sailors!
This fine burgee did, for two seasons, do its noble work, and finally at the end of this one, did unravel piteously in this last weekend's 25-35 kt breezes, despite stitching repairs accomplished last month, and so - must be retired to our Wall of Nautical Mementos!
Now here is the problem - the CD burgee available via this web site is the familiar Blue "CD" with the bear, but the white one we had, with the hull pattern, doesn't seem to be sold any more! Can this be true? Will we no longer be able to fly the familiar flag with the white ground and the fine hull outline?
If anyone has one of these available for sale, we will be honoured to make the necessary specie available, and conclude the transaction posthaste.
And fellow CD'ers here in the NE, don't forget to check your cross-catharpings and futtock shrouds - they do need seasonal maintenance!

Yves,
"All that lives must die,
Passing through nature to eternity". (W. Shakespeare, Hamlet)
That burgee was ALIVE just as much as Alphee is alive! Shed a tear and keep the memories!
As for the burgee. The blue burgee with the CD on it is from the CCDOA.This board's sponsor. The other burgee, of which you speak is from the Cape Dory national organization. I got my burgee last year when I joined. That's the group that sponsored the rendezvous out in your next of the Sound this year. Click on their site and you should be able to get one.

Re: Leo & Catherine, you need to look.......
Esteemed Captain Feder,
Sorry to hear that you will bew on half-pay shortly. But all good things come to an end.
I asked Leo MacDonald and Catherine Monaghan to look at your post because as NE Fleet member #268, you should have gotten a Fleet Burgee when you joined. The NE burgee is tan background with the C and hull outline. It is really quite nice.
Aye Matey, and don't ya know that Hanalei was on & off of Noank this Saturday last. Left the slip with two reefs thrown in, and still ripped a 4 foot gash in the mains'l. The breezes were up there!

Year 2000 One-time Deal
Dave,
As far as I know, only those that joined the CDSOA as new members in 2000 received a free burgee while supplies lasted. Everyone before that, and afterwards, has to buy one if they want one.
Any CDSOA member who wants a burgee can send a check for $20.00 ($18.00 plus $2.00 shipping) made payable to the <b>"CDSOA"</b> to Ann Webster, 3109 Bech Street NW, Washington, DC, 20015.

Not everyone...

I'm contacting Ann Webster for a new burgee. Mine though was as you describe but on a white (not tan) background.
I guess I could "fly the bear" too, right?
Sorry about your main Dave. Last Sat was a stinker all right, t'was the day of the Race Rock Regatta, and we saw 'em coming in wet and cold in Stonington afterwards. Incidentally as you probably know one of the boats, a fine old New York 32-type 40 footer named "Hob Nob" went down about 1/2 mile south of Fisher's Island. Cause unknown, all rescued thanks to USCG. Suppose planks probably opened up or God knows what. Winds gusting 35-40 kts plus.
Not exactly in keeping with Hank Hinckley's old admonition, "Gentlemen do not beat to Weather" eh wot, Post Captain Stump?
This half-pay nonsense will have to be nursed with appropriate libation at the nearest Pig & Whistle! I know of three such in Stonington. Several in Mystic. Other half-pay Sea Fencibles frequent these cozy establishments. Let's do it!
Best,
Yves

Re: Was Hob Nob gaff rigged??
Captain Feder,
If she was, she blew by Hanalei just off of Flat Hammock as we were heading back to Noank under power. Her rig was scandalized something awful, and her boom would lift 12 feet in the air or higher with a puff. She was decidedly in the lead of the fleet, but they were all really moving! The fleet was on a dead run, headed toward the Dumplings and then out to the Race.
When I got Hanalei tied securly in her slip, the 1st. Mate made a nice lunch for all of us(Captain was soaked from GREEN water over the bow from motorin' into that terrible wind! <a wind that had the Captain talkin' to his maker a few times!>)and I had left the VHF on. That's when we heard the CG Falcon jet out of Cape Cod talkin' to another vessel that apparently was close to Hob Nob. The jet dropped two (2!) liferafts to the SOBs, they got one and 4 of 'em got off. Two stayed aboard and were eventually taken off by a small boat launched from a CG cutter out of New London. Last I heard was the CG telling New London base that they were marking the wreck!
Made for quite the listenin'...hope all are OK....

Re: No, she wasn't....
Spoke the mate in the sail loft about 0900 today. She said Hob Nob was marconni(sp) rigged. She sank standin' up, in about 15 feet of water(some say 20+). It was about 5 minutes from dry bilge to 2 feet of the briney in the cabin. Thought that it was a sprung garboard plank. Oh, here is a good case for maintainence, she is in the water ALL year at a morring, speculation is that she had not been pulled this year.
Captain did do right though, headed her to a beach, and put her on soft, no rocks. Salvagers out today or tomorrow.

Macht Nichts,
Got me, but I'm a sailor not a pilot. But I distinctly heard them talking on the radio, I think to New London, and they said they had dropped two! Maybe it is encapsulated or something. Hits the water and opens. But good question, how do we find the answer?
