Captain DeMers...sail questions...
Captain DeMers,
The UK sails you put on DeLaMer, are they UKs "tape drive" sails? Or are they just dacron. Are the sails white or brown yukki looking? I know the main you got is loose footed, can UK make them with a captured foot as the originals were? Yours are 7.5 ounce(main), what was weight of original Dacron sails? Can I just measure my old main, or do I have to take the rig down to get leach, luff and all the other measurements UK asks for?
Thqnks for your help, no, I haven't mailed cradle disks yet.

Re: Captain DeMers...sail questions...
Captain Stump:
Kind sir if memory serves me correctly I believe most of the information you seek regarding your sails is listed in the CD Manual. In the 1986 Manual available on line as a PDF file, check out drawings under Chapter 5, Page 117, Section 5.39 CD30 and also in the Technical Information Section at the end of Chapter 4, on Page 68. Also measure your existing sails and go from there on the modifications.

Re: Captain DeMers...sail questions...
Captain Stump;
UK has a boat Database which includes the CD30. They will make the sail in any configuration you wish (slugs, bolt ropes, loose footed or not). If you are comfortable with the cut of your current sail I would also measure it just to double check.

Re: Captain DeMers...sail questions...
Hi Captain Dave,
Don't worry about the cradle pictures..another reader sent the whole correct file to me, and I was able to decipher the one you sent, so have a whole mess of views of the CD30 cradle project, and will post them on my web site this winter (when i get it up and running..I do have 5mb of space, expandable to 10).
On the Sails:
They are Bainbrich Cloth (Dacron), 7.5 oz as you mentioned.
Also, be aware that our loft was giving us their winter time special price.
Cheers and enjoy that sail,

Nope..tape drive is a 'high tech' solution I felt, and typical of high tech, not very forgiving of too much wind or being overcanvassed, so they tend to shatter (they shatter rather than just rip). They are not tan bark either, but regular white.D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: The UK sails you put on DeLaMer, are they UKs "tape drive" sails?

Absolutely, but why would you want to? The loose footed main is a great improvement over the old sail with a locked in shape. You see that is the whole reason for buying a loose footed main..the variability to tune that sail from very flat and low gain to very full, with lots of gain. The cost was almost identical, except I opted for a single full batten, silicon impregnated sail slides that would take the load of the heavier sail, triple reef points and double sewing all stitch points. I figure about $1400 for that sail, so use that as a comparison. If you want, I can send the addr. of the sailloft in Bayfield, Wisc.. where my sailmaker calls home. She could certainly build one identical to ours (she actually orders and installs them, the building happened in Chicago). My price included an extra $100 for the triple reefing and cringles, which amounts to an extra $150 perhaps..included in the price quote of $1400.D. 7.0 oz I believe.D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: Yours are 7.5 ounce(main), what was weight of original Dacron

Sure, use the old for a pattern..as it fit originally. Make note of any changes you want to make and you should be fine.D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: Can I just measure my old main, or do I have to take the rig down

Bob Malinka..your E-Mail address?
Bob,
Forgive me for contacting you this way, but I've tried to e-mail you twice in the past week and I keep on getting a message that the e-mail is undeliverable. Better check it?
Anyway, I believe I saw you racing with your yacht club about a week (Sunday) ago. You had just turned the outbound mark in GSB and there was another Cape Dory right behind you. That big Hylas 45 Windquest was just turning the mark behind the Cape Dory. I was eastbound and just north of you and I was waving. I know you were trimming sails at the time but perhaps you saw me. How did you do in the race? Did you make us Cape Dorians proud?

New Sails...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Captain Stump,
As you know I have considered new shoes for Macht Nichts, is this perhaps the reason for your inquiry???????
Anyway.... UK has on their computer a full listing of CD's and they come up with the measurements. I guess I might double check that with original or specs in CD manuals.
I'm fascinated by this loose foot.......I am probably going with the fully battened main as I have it now and like the performance!!!!!!!
So sir...are you that scared of Macht Nichts... with her new sails.....
Looking foreword to seeing you at the battlefield next year!!!!!!!
Some wind this Sat. !!!!!!! Heard on radio that a 40 sailboat hit the rocks in your area... not good!!!

Hob Nob sank 1/2 mile S. Fishers Island
S?V HOB NOB sank about 1/2 mile S. Fishers Island Saturday. The 8 souls on board were rescuded by the CG. We were out and saw the CG Falcon dropping a liferaft to them. Kinda scary day. Winds were gusting up to 32 knots.

Re: CG Falcon and comms....
Captain Carr,
Hanalei was back in her slip and crew was having a nice lunch when we heard over the radio the Falcon talking to a vessel that was close to "Hob Knob"?? It was SIX (6) souls on board (SOBs), 4 made it to one of the two rafts the Falcon dropped, and 2 were taken off by a small boat launched from a CG bouy tender out of New London. Last thing we heard was that the CG was marking the wreck! Not good to hear this type of communication!

No Sir, only thinking about it because of the rip I put in her main on Saturday last. But, now that you mention it ! ! ! By the way, I believe the vessel lost was 50 feet in length, and don't know why she got in trouble.

Is this database accessible by me? Do you have an address to get to it? Thanks for help...

Re: UK boat Database...? ? ?
Dave,
The Data base I refer to is the one they have. I doubt it is available to the general public.
They use it to give you a quick price on sails. You would have to go to one of there locations. There is a branch office here in Norwalk, If you would like to come down, we could "do" lunch, or just go for a sail!!!!! or both!!
If you would like I could just ask him for a quote for a Cape Dory 30 or I suppose you could call. His name is Matt.
If any of the above works for you let me know!!!
