Seeing that we have such a prolific group of racers please check out this event. Should be a great time and the charitable cause is worth it. ATTN: Capt Stump..now's your chance to beat the J-boats.

Captain Carr,

Hanalei was at sea Saturday last in 20-25 knots sustained, double reefed with yankee alone, conducting routine sail drill to keep crew up to snuff. One of the cringles, aft, was too tight, and ripped a 4 foot tear in the main. So, Hanalie is not up to the contest right now, but she may get a new main this year for next years contest. Awaiting you at sea Sir, I remain, your most HUMBLE servant.....

How old was your main

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Captain Stump,

I am just curious. I read where your mainsail parted because of a tight reefing line at the leech (if memory serves). Was that main the original, or a least an old main?? Were you surprised that the sail split??

Captain Kaplan,

The sail is original Ulmer from 1984. It split at the aft cringle, not on the leach, but about 4 feet in front of it. Cringle, that is the line used to tie up the baggy part of a reefed sail. I just tied it too tight, Captains error, but don't tell anyone! It is repairable, but makes one think of how nice a new one would be?????

Particularly with the contest to be waged next year at sea!!!
