Cape Dory Virus??!

Post by Bruce Bett »

Twice in the last couple of weeks I got the following very suspicious message in my e-mail.

Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks

Mt. Aviation.doc.bat ATT02001.ATT

The names of the attachments were different but otherwise it was the same. THIS LOOKS LIKE A VIRUS! The first one I got came from a participant of this board. The second I did not recognize but his e-mail name suggested that he had an interest in sailing.

Please understand that I am NOT accusing any on this board of imitating a virus attack. I suspect that someone may be getting e-mail addresses from this list and attacking them. I would be very interested to know whether any of the rest of you have seen this message.

Thanks

DO NOT OPEN THE DOCUMENT! It is indeed a virus, and if you received it no one is attacking you other than the hacker who made it. It sends itself to everyone in your address book. Norton has a fix on their site if you are infected.

Tim is right. We were the victim of that virus, SirCam, on 9/11. There is a free repair tool available on the web. If you open the email and are infected, get the repair tool and let it run. It is much easier than the brute force method I used. We still have not recovered our old message folders since Microsoft won't let us import them to Outlook Express.

I got the virus from only one board participant, but it came in at least four different messages, so be diligent in routing it out.

Ken:

I'm not infected I did not open the attachments. I am just interested in how extencively e-mail addresses were harvested from this board, not that I think there's much we can do about it.

Bruce,

I think that in the case of Sir Cam, the email addresses are harvested from address books, not message boards. The process is automatic and relys on weakness in Microsoft Outlook, Windows, etc. I am not certain whether the virus can also attack other operating systems, but maybe so.

I have received at least 6 of those emails from different sources. I now automatically delete any email with an attachment if I do not recognize the name of the sender. I also run all attachments through virus scan.

But the e-mail could come from someone you know, if they get their computer infected. Even if the e-mail comes from someone you know, w/ a "strange" attachment, DO NOT OPEN IT. Try and comfirm they sent it, run it thru an up-to-date virus scanner, etc. Thats what makes these virus's so nasty. You get something from someone you know (well) and you get nailed and get stuff sent from you to others. Someone could have scanned the board to get e-mail addresses to send a new virus to, to start things off.

I never give out e-mail address. But having posted on this board with e-mail address, I started to receive unsolicited mail within a day of the posting. Yes this site is being used as a source for e-mail marketing.
If you don't want to be exposed to mass marketing e-mail, don't leave your address here.

Ah! Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought we were talking about viruses, not junk mail to board members. I agree that this board is being used to find the addresses of people interested in boating. I guess that is a price one must pay.
