As current happy owners of a Typhoon, sailing in L.I. Sound, we decided that a CD28 would be just the boat for us to move up to. But every one we have seen or heard about has terrible rust disease in the non-stainless metal structural more-than-just-a-chainplate area inside the chain locker. This is not just surface rust but scary corrosion. I've searched this message board and have determined that yes, indeed, this is a problem in many 28's.
Our question is this: are there any (possibly later, we've been looking at 1970's boats) 28's WITHOUT this problem? Surely someone determined that it was a problem while they were still in production and changed to stainless or aluminum or something??
We do not want to buy a boat that needs repairs of this magnitude. Should we forget the CD28?
Thanks for any information you can give us!

Are there 28's WITHOUT rust out there?

I don't have specifics but found the same concern when I looked at CD30s, 33s and 36s. In the 36 foot model they changed from steel to aluminum around 1984. Not sure if they made 28s past that time or not.
I'd contact Robinhood Marine in Georgetown Maine. As I am sure you know, the previous owner of Cape Dory still makes a 36 footer called the Robinhood 36.

On my CD33??
Tell me it ain't so Dave ...
I have a 1984 CD33. I've read about this rusting problem but I don't know where to look for it. I've seen a deck support beam in the chain locker but that looks like aluminum. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Are there 28's WITHOUT rust out there?
During the survey of our 1977 CD 28 last April, rust was noted but the suveyor didn't think it was bad enough to worry about. The rust is now on my short list of things to attend to.
