The original equipment depth sounder on my CD25d doesn't work. Does anyone know a quick test to determine if it's the tranducer or the display unit that has failed? Replacing the display unit is no problem. (19-years of service, it's probably time to retire it anyway.) However, the transducer is glassed into the hull. If I can determine that it's still working, I'd rather leave it alone.
As always, your combined wisdom is much appreciated.

Depth Sounder's Death-Maybe?

Re: Depth Sounder's Death-Maybe?
What brand is the unit, Mike?
If it Datamarine, they are located in Pocasset Ma, and can check your unit for you. They checked our 18yr old unit which turned out to be fine. The transducer was gone and it is also a thru hull transducer. We bought a new transducer and when we haul we will remove the old and install the new. In the mean time we have been lowering the new transducer over the side if we are in a place that we are unsure of the depth. We attempted to install it as a shoot thru-hull, but we were unable to find a good spot. Haulout is in another week.

When mine failed, I got a Standard Horizon meter to replace it. Installed the meter and found that it worked fine without changing the transducer.
Try wiring in a different meter to the transducer. If it works, then you've isolated the problem. If it's still not working, try wiring a new transducer to the old meter. Careful, because the meter and transducer need to be compatible.

Re: Depth Sounder's Death-Maybe?
My data Marine depth sounder has failed a couple of times and I am familiar with some of the symptoms which can differentiate a transducer failure from a unit failure... Can you describe what its doing .. or not doing?

Re: Lowering the transducer over the side ....
Thank you for the advise. It looks like the transducer is bad. With haul out in a couple of weeks, I guess I've got ANOTHER winter project.
Thanks Again,
Mike
