MSG. for Captain Dave Stump
Capt'n Stump Sir, [snappy salute here],
A few years ago, I sent you a package of highly annotated .jpg's of my cradle, along with a keyed spred sheet of the dimensions of each structural member of the cradle.
I have had a few requests for this package, and have one currently waiting for help building a CD30 cradle. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a search for that series of 5 pictures (I believe) that I sent you. My copies have been lost completely..I cannot locate them any longer.
I have decided that I am going to install a web site this winter. On this site I will put construction pictures, details on various of our Cape Dory 30 projects over the past 12 years, but I wanted also to provide a place where project details and photos of all the boards projects could be archived with access by members of this group. I will control access to the web site as far as uploading goes, but downloading access will be open to the group.
The cradle project seems to be a very good candidate for this site.
Would you please see what you can find, and send the photos you do have to my home addr. at ldemers@wwt.net
Anyone else that has plans or pix of projects that you would like to be available to all Cape Dorians, please e-mail me with details and we'll arrange for a copy to be placed on the web site (not set up yet..wait until November-Dec).
That's about all for now..keep your stick on the ice!
Cheers,
Larry DeMers

Re: MSG. for Captain Dave Stump - Monosodium Glutamate??
Larry,
What a wonderful thing for you to do for us. I guess winter must be setting in rather fast, eh?
If you have any photos of the dinghy "box" you have straddling the companionway cover, I'd love to see them posted. I think that is a good project for our short winter here in the Carolinas.
Glad to see you are back and feeling better.

Re: MSG. for Captain Dave Stump - Monosodium Glutamate??
Ken,
Woops..i completely dropped your request..sorry. I gotta get some pix of it first. The one I am using now is pine and a rought draft of the oak and teak version to be built eventually. But it will serve to show how it's constructed.
Winter is fast approaching. We have already had snow on Superior..saw it on the way home from the trip we took actually. It was that partially frozen junk that melts as it hits..but jeesh, it was still frozen stuff. I have 6 full cords coming next week, and the pull out date has been set for Oct. 12th or the 19th if the weather holds. So yup, sadly, it's close by. We'll push the season if we can..our last trip always seems to be great until the trip home, and that has been a NW gales with a snow storm and *really* big seas. Makes you glad to get off the lake actually. .The lakes personality has already changed over to late fall behavior. Higher winds with strong gusts from 30 deg. off the main wind, big cold front clouds, low to the water, maybe 80% sky coverage, so some sun gets through.
So as the grass goes into hibernation, so do we sort of. Frankly, it isn't all it's cracked up to be. ;^) Now if we could find someplace that had the sailing of Superior, and the weather of say, Costa Rica at 2000 ft., now that would be pretty nice. heh..so we try to make winter go faster..sleeping a lot helps! heh..
Cheers,
Larry

Captain Stump,
Some of us prefer to keep the sodium on the outside and so we are sensitive to MSG content and sometimes get confused by abbreviations that look like acronyms.
I should be sailing....

Re: Arg, Matey, go to sea.....
Captain Coit,
Reviewed yours of the 19th. this instant. Seems as skipper you have been on half pay and on the hard a might too long. The combination of unlimited spirits, doxy girls, and large amounts of fresh food(the green stuff WILL get to any fine sailor!) must be affecting your senses.
Check with the Admiral of the Fleet, she probably will concur with sending you on a special mission just to get your sea legs back! Ah, and Matey, ya might lock the door to the spirit locker for a piece....I remain...your most HUMBLE servant.....

Wisconsin weather?
Larry,
There, there...snow already. Dear me! Here in Northern California we have had steady 55 degree nights and high 70's to low 80's in the day. Admittedly not Lake Superior, but we can sail all winter.
Pays your money and takes your choice...see you next summer.

Superior's Gales
Larry,
Lake Superior gales have a reputation for fierceness known the maritime world over. I think November is the real scarey month. After that the ice precludes much water traffic doesn't it? Wasn't it one of those November gales that put the Edmund Fitzgerald on the bottom off of Whitefish Point back in the 70s? Nasty business.

Re: Superior's Gales
Hi Warren,
Aiee, that it did, back in 1972 I believe. The storms in the winter can generate up to 100 ft. tall waves with a period of 5 sec. That is an impossible wave to negotiate in anything that Cape Dory ever thought of making! We have seen some winter storms in action, and it is truly an impressively scary sight.
The winter weather has begun here already, alternating back and forth with late fallish weather..typical for this time of the year. So we generally get a chance to test the high wind management skills a bit this time of year ;^)...but certainly not in the 100 ft. tall stuff I mentioned above.
Cheers,

Re: Wisconsin weather?
Hi Serge,
Yup..this is Riff-Raff avoidance weather! heh, and is usually the start of the snowbirds leaving for the winter. The winter weather does get a bit boring though, truth be told. Gotta stay warm and busy.
See you next year! Remember to contact us before you get up to Isle Madeline', and we'll spend a weekend in the islands with you. Have a great winter in warm No. Cal.

Re: Michigan weather.......
Larry,
If I remember right, looking back about 35+ years, when I lived in Alpena, MI, on Lake Huron, about 80 miles from Suite Saint Marie and the Mackinac Bridge, wasn't it the popular saying that Spring, Summer and Fall in Northern Michigan took place the months of June, July, and August! ! ! But, Southern California - - Naw, Matey, give me soul to the shores of New England anytime!
100 foot WAVES! ! ! Jeez, that's over twice the height of your mast Larry. And a 5 second period! I just can't imagine something like that.
OK Matey, I know the Apostle Islands and Isle Royal are about as close as one can get to Gods Country, but it is time to think about a voyage down the S.L.S around and down the coast of Maine and New England to meet the crews of the New England Fleet at next years randeavous. A log of THAT in a Cape Dory, should establish you and your Mate as the primary writers/photographers of things nautical for all time! Maybe with the right approach, Mystic Seaport would help as a sponser? Please excuse my spelling, spell checker died....I remain Sir, your most HUMBLE servant.....
