We are current owners of a Ty & are looking to move up next year. Er are thinkng our budge will allow us 27-30'. AbCD 28 will probably track better, heave to, better motion, etc. Conversely, I would expect the C & C 27 to have better speed on all points, probably less comfortable in a sea, more space below.
I realize I'm asking for a biased opinion, but I would like to hear them anyway.
Thanks,
Chris
C & C 27 or CD 28??

Re: C & C 27 or CD 28??
Captain Chris,
The gentleman Captain in the slip next to mine has a C&C 27. It has a folding prop, special sails (read that new), he stripped the bottom bairer coated it, applied a special bottom paint(Hand rubbed), and did a lot of other stuff to it. He is constantly calling Hanalei out for a little trial race.
Although Hanalei, a CD-30C 1984 IS currently the #1 CD-30C in non spinnaker class of the CDSOA, I have not met his challenge. It would be "No Contest"! The C&C 27 is hands down the faster of the two vessels. But, it depends on what you want. The CD is a fine, well found vessel, she has low freeboard, is sea kindly(will be at sea long after the C&C has returned under reefed sails to the dock)and is great for cruising. If you want to race, in my humble estimation, the C&C would be the better choice. The difference in length is probably very minor. But, the higher freeboard on the C&C will make her bounce around a bit more in a strong wind.
Just my opinion, but then I am hooked on CDs. Your servant...

Re: C & C 27 or CD 28??
I believe you have already answered a lot of your questions.
Check out this link to compare the CD28 to the C&C27:

BTW I have raced in C&C27's and all though they are not a "bad"
boat the fit, finish and construction does not in anyway compare
to a Cape Dory. While the C&C27's are faster and sail closer to
windward with in-board shrouds they do not have as nice a motion
comfort while at sea.
You need to make the decision based on how you intend to use
the boat. Ask yourself will you be racing or cruising the boat?
If it's cruising the answer is very clear that the Cape Dory
is the right boat.
One other note you should be apprised of is that if your thinking of
trading up to a CD28 my advise would be to go directly to a CD30.
The larger displacement, living space and a longer waterline
will be of great benefit in the long run while cruising.

Re: C & C 27 or CD 28??
If you are looking for a CD30C, please EMAIL me and I'll show you my boat. I might be looking to sell my beloved boat at the end of the season for a bigger boat. I live in NJ.Chris wrote: Hi Chris

Apples and oranges
These boats have little in common. A CD 28 is a 9,000 lb full keel, attached rudder, diesel auxilliary. A C&C 27 is a 5,500 lb fin keel, spade rudder, gas (in most cases) auxilliary. I don't think there will be much difference in usable interior space. I would anticipate that the C&C will perform better in light winds, performance won't be that much different in moderate winds, and the CD will perform better when the wind picks up. The CD will be a much better boat for cruising. For a mix of racing and weekending, you would be better off with the C&C.

When the wind picks up...
Yes,
The C&C will point higher and reach hull speed in lighter winds. But, when the wind picks up and both boats approach hull speeds, the C&C will still be ugly.
