Political survey of sailors
Years ago, a business associate/boater enlightened me that there was a political divide in the boating community. He claimed that power boaters were largely conservatives and sailors, democrats. I'm curious (as other CDOA members may also be) on the accuracy of his claim. If you care to, state your politcal persuassion ("moderates" will be considered liberals):

Re: Political survey of sailors -- GO AWAY
This post and the one below makes it clear to me that you are on some kind of a which hunt or are using this board to make a polical point. I think I can speak for everyone when I say I don't care what anybody's political leanings are on here. And I certainly don't appreciate you or anyone else attempting to label me based on what kind of propulsion I prefer in my watercraft.

Do you REALLY want to do this??
I learned a long time ago to stay away from discussing two subjects unless it was absolutely pertinent to the forum (sailing on this board) at hand. Those subjects are: Politics and Religion. I have never known anyone to change anyone's mind, or gain any new friends from discussing these subjects but I know plenty of people who have alienated many friends when they did. Since I consider everyone on this board obviously brilliant since they chose Cape Dorys, and therefore all people who I would like to be my friends, I will respectfully decline to enter upon this discussion.

Re: Political survey of sailors
One thing that has always been so appealing about sailing is the fact that we can leave our everyday lives at home and step into the even ground of sailing. It doesn't matter what we do for a living or where we live. What does matter is that we all share a love for sailing. Politics poisons most everything it touches. Let us share this board as it was intended.
Thanks.

Re: Political survey of sailors
What a silly thing to see on this wonderful and informative board! Who cares what we are, as long as we sail and love Cape Dories. My goodness, such bunk!Hal wrote: Years ago, a business associate/boater enlightened me that there was a political divide in the boating community. This is inappropiate, please delete it..
Wrong Website (IMHO)
Your "research" is impertinent. In the interest of good fellowship, consider the scope of interest (CDs) of the other users of this site in the future.
I'm sure that you must know of a chat room that would welcome your query.

Re: Do you REALLY want to do this??
Warren, I second your remarks and would go further to ask folks to consider remarking on Tuesday's horrific events only to the extent it reflects our common interest in sailing generally and sailing CDs in particular. We share this interest even though many of us might differ in our political beliefs and how each of us would respond to these tragedies. 'Sabine' and I assume most other CDs use no gasoline whatsoever under sail, so I think discussions of fuel prices on this site are irrelevant.Warren Kaplan wrote: I learned a long time ago to stay away from discussing two subjects unless it was absolutely pertinent to the forum (sailing on this board) at hand. Don't fool yourself; your business associate/boater did not enlighten you.Hal wrote: Years ago, a business associate/boater enlightened me that there was a political divide in the boating community. Re: Political survey of sailors
As a Cape Dory thirty footer, I guess I am solidly in the center of the spectrum, although I confess to having once been shorter, (CD 27) and am flirting with the concept of longer (CD33), although I do agree with those who believe that a foot of beam is better than a foot of length. Hope this is helpful to the survey.

Timing, Hal, Timing ...
This is a perfectly reasonable question, Hal. Had you asked it a week ago, I'm sure many people on this board would have happily offered their opinions on the differences between power boaters and sailors. Given the events of the last few days, however, your timing strikes people as inappropriate. Something like talking about your vacation at a funeral.
One of the great things about this board is that it is more than just a discussion of repairs and hardware. I have been impressed time and again by the insights people have offered into just what it is that makes sailing so rewarding, and Cape Dories so appealing. We are fortunate to have several active posters who are true authorities on the subject, and gifted writers as well. Many posters also seem to have quite a sense of humor.
Obviously the tragedy has put people on edge. Living in Manhattan, I see how deeply it is affecting everyone. Overnight, thousands of missing persons flyers have been taped up, displacing the smiling faces on the political campaign posters of the day before. To read a wall full of these posters is almost more than one can bear. You feel the pain of a thousand broken hearts, a city filled with crying families that will never be the same.
Hal, try posing your question again in a few weeks. I for one have plenty of opinions about what is wrong with power boaters.

...and then there are those like me
Hal,
I am not going to share my party affiliation since I think it's an irrelevant topic on this board. But I will share this. I am from a family of boaters, both power and sail. My father owned a sailboat before purchasing a powerboat and enjoyed them equally. As a matter of fact, he died while hitching the boat/trailer up to his truck. Many of my relatives love to fish and have assortments of boats ranging from canoes and rowboats to sporty runabouts, bowriders, trawlers and sportfisherman. And then there are the sailors. I, for one, love boating in general. If anyone invites me out for a day on the water, consider me on board -- power or sail. But my passion is sailing and I own and operate a 32-foot sailboat. None of my family are wealthy. Most don't have college educations. And some didn't even finish high school. We are also spread out from MA to FL with a heavy concentration in NC. I'm in NJ, sail on both lower and upper NY Harbor and nearly always within view of NYC and it's famous skyline. And as far as political affiliations of my boating relatives are concerned, they are all mixed. So you cannot make a judgement that powerboaters are one thing and sailors are another politically. We are all people who share a love and respect for the water whether we're paddling, rowing, driving or sailing. Politics has nothing to do with.
