When entering the harbor on Saturday, I went to start my outboard (2-stroke Mariner 9.9) on my CD 25. The engine started right away (as always), but with more smoke than normal. As I put it in gear and attempted to accellerate the engine seemed not to turn the prop then it abruptly died.
I have no idea what happened. Fortunately I was able to sail to the mooring.
Worth noting:
* My bottom paint has completely failed me this summer and there is more growth than normal on the engine.
* I smelled what smelled like home heating oil for about 30 min before I turned the engine on. I highly doubt this is realted, but I mention it in the interest of full disclosure.
Any thoughts?

check your fuel tank. if it smells like home heating oil you may have a diesel/oil mix instead of a gasoline/oil mix for that outboard. this would not hurt the motor i don't believe, but you will need to empty the tank, the carb, the carb bowl, and put in a new or clean the spark plug.

I thought of that, but I ran for a good hour with the same tank last weekend before these problems.

Re: Dead Outboard Day on the Board
last week I ran my new nissan 8 for a short time and it started and ran well. This past Saturday it started fine but smoked a bit more than usual and ran "bogged down" in gear under full throttle. I yanked the engine and found, as you did, that my micron 33 spray did not do the trick. After opening up the water intake and through the prop exhaust she's just fine.. wish you the same luck !
