Pricing 28'Cape Dory Sailboat

Post by Diane Griffith »

Please help! I am trying to determine a sale price for my 28 footer. She was built in 1984, and has full cruising package. She was just dry docked, so has all new hull paint, and all through-the-hull fittings have been repacked. The engine has 500 hours, with excellent maintenance records. Overall condition inside is excellent, extra cruising sails and radar. Recommendations on where to look to determine price greatly appreciated.

I recently purchased a 1979 CD 28, hull # 226, but without an engine (the Volvo was seized and had been removed). It's in a yard now as I am installing a new engine, just finished all new thru-hulls and repacking seacocks, new fuel tank, cabin sole and several other upgrades. I only paid $12,000 but will put about $10k in it and figure she will be worth $22k to $25k. Hope this helps.

I'd look carefully at Yachtworld.com and Soundings. Equipment, age and condition of sails, as well as cosmetic condition are all factors. Small aspects of your model may be important; Univeral Diesel?, ports with drip/drains, midship cleats, etc. Very few 28s were made in the later years. Two model years acounted for 2 hull numbers between ours and a 1987! Within the last year a very nice 1983 was for sale in NE FLA for low 30s. Don't know if it sold, but it was in excellent condition and very well equipped. Location may also be a factor. Good luck!

Look into BUC (www.bucvalu.com) and maybe NADA (www.nada.com) under their boat section and look around for others selling the same boat, allowing for year, condition, extra's, location, etc (www.yachtworld.com, www.yachtingnet.com, www.starboardtack.com, www.soundingsonline.com, www.boats.com, www.ablboats.com, and of course, your local marinas, boat publications, etc). Good luck
