WATERLINE ON A TYPHOON

Post by DON »

I KNOW THIS IS AN AWFUL TASK BUT CAN SOME ONE TELL ME THE DEPTH OF THE BOOT STRIPE EVERY 1 FOOT STARTING FROM THE FRONT =- I REALIZE THE DISTANCE VARIES ALONG THE WATERLINE - WIDER AT THE FRONT AND STERN

SOMEONE PAINTED THE BOAT RIGHT TO THE TOP OF THE BOOT STRIPE AND I AM NOW UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHERE THE WATER LINE IS.

PLEASE GIVE ME THE MEASUREMENTS FROM THE TOP OF THE BOOTSTRIPE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOOTSTRIPE EVERY ONE FOOT OF THE TOP OF THE BOOT STRIPE LENGTH.

THANKS IN ADVANCE AND I APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORTS DON

Hi Don,
I have recently painted a new bootstripe on my Ty. I measured a very nice Ty that was resident in the neighborhood. My measurements are not quite what you ask for but the result was very good.

Measurements are from immediately below the rubrail and perpendicular to the rubrail. Keep the tape straight. I used my wife's plastic seamstress's tape. The first number is to the bottom of the boot stripe, the second to the top of the boot stripe.
At 2' 29", 26", At 4' 26", 23 1/4", At 6" 22 5/8", 20 1/8", At 8', 19 7/8", 17 3/4", At 10' 18 1/4", 16 1/4" At 12' 17 5/8", 15 5/8" At 14" 17 7/8", 15 1/2", At 16', 20 1/2", 16 1/2", At 17', 24 3/4", 19", At 18', 31 1/2", 23 1/4". From the bottom of the transom along the centerline of the hull, 9 1/2", 2 5/8". I marked these points on my hull. I then took a 3/8" batten and used it to fair the line between the points. Of course this only works to the turn of the bilge. The wide bootstripe under the counter is a little off but I couldn't see that because I was working in the garage and could not sight it from a distance. If you are outside you can stand back 20' and have someone adjust. Actually in the water it is perfectly satisfactory. This bootstripe is not on the actual lwl but an inch or two above.

I had the exact same problem so I took a guess and went by the bits of the old waterline still visible. Looked good on land and in the water until I decided to leave the outboard on, locked by cable to the bracket. This changed the waterline and I have a nice crop of vegetation to prove it.
Remember that the waterline will change with balance of gear (sails, motors, fuel tank, etc.)
I did measure what I estimated to be the waterline before painting and my figures are very similar to Bob Chamberland's. I'll have new figures for next season!

Don Casey, in his book "This old Boat" suggests that the easiest way to mark the waterline with the boat out of the water is to measure one spot where the old waterline is (preferably before sanding off the old paint), fix a garden hose with two clear plastic extensions (don't know where you'd find these, but presumably you can), tie one end of the hose to a lifeline or stay with the clear extension at about the waterline, hold the other end of the hose up and fill the hose until the water is visible in the clear extensions at the level of the waterline you measured. Now you can move the free end of the hose around the boat and mark the waterline wherever you want -- less frequently where the hull is flat, more in those areas of compound curves. The water acts as a level.

I may not have explained that well. Don does a better job in his book.

Hope that helps (or at least doesn't confuse the issue!)

I might add a few comments to Bob's excellent post in case someone later does a search and reads his measurements.

1. Bob mentions his newly painted bootstripe "is not on the actual lwl but an inch or two above." It should be noted that Bob has NOT raised his bootstripe as some have asked about doing on this board. Actually, except for the stern area, Bob's measurements for the top of his bootstripe are very close to the original bootstripe top painted on by the factory. What Bob has done, however, is to narrow his bootstripe, so that - for example - 10 feet back from the bow where the original bootstripe was 4 inches in width, Bob's is only 2 inches. Hence, his bootstripe is an "inch or two" above the waterline compared to the original factory bootstripe.

2. In the stern area, Bob has raised the bootstripe. Thus, under the "counter," (part of the stern that overhangs the rudder and is above the waterline), where the original bootstripe measurements are 5 1/2 to 16 1/4 inches, he has raised his bootstripe to 2 5/8 to 9 1/2 inches.

This might help someone in the future.

Roger
