Mainsheet system

Post by Mel Vincent »

I have a 1977 CD 28 hull # 129 which has the mainsheet attached to the end of the boom. Has any one moved it to the cabin top? What are the pros and cons? How did you go about and what type of equipment did you use?
I have been hit too many times by the mainsheet and think it is time for a better location, before this system takes my head off. Why did Cape dory put this system in place? I would be thankful for any input

Thanks

Mel, I have a '77, hull # 142 , which I switched over to a cabin top traveler about 4 or 5 years ago. I have a Harken traveler built up on teak risers. I did not feel the need for the windward sheeting car as this one has worked fine. My wife can pull in the main and adjust the traveller in winds of 20 knots +. I too was tired of stepping over the sheets everytime I jibed and losing the rear two seats in the cockpit when hard on. I did all the work myself and I think cost was around $1200 for everything but I would have to check on that. I have pictures if you would like to see them. Any further questions just e mail me.
