Oil leak/replacing oil seals on crankshaft??

Post by Brian Johnson »

Hellow all,
I have an oil leak from the Westebeke 10-2 on my CD 26D. I believe I have localized the source of the leak to the oil seal on the transmission end of the crankshaft. The oil drips from the bottom of the flywheel housing. It drips from where the housing joins to the back plate of the engine block as well as where the housing joins the transmission. There are no gaskets for these joints, and I believe that oil is not supposed to be inside that housing. After studying the engine parts diagrams, the rear crankshaft oil seal looks like the piece which is supposed to keep the oil out of there. Does anyone have experience with replacing this seal. It looks to me like a complicated and pricey repair involving pulling the engine. The oil leak is mainly a housekeeping problem as I don't motor much, however I am losing probably one once every 2 hours of motoring. Anyone have any advice/experience??
Thanks

Hi Brian..

I have the same leaks on my Westerbeke 21A. What you describe is I believe the crank shaft seals. Both the front and rear leak a little on mine. I just went thru the engine and did a major rebuild. The mechanic I was working with suggested I leave those seals alone unless they get really bad. The effort to replace them is very great vs the amount of oil leakage. To get to the front seal I would have to cut the lower pully off and replace it. It seems to be frozen on the shaft. And I would have to pull the block to get at the rear one.

I have found that frequent oil changes help keep the seals from leaking as much. Mine are kind of intermittent. They leak a little then stop for a while. Fresh oil doesnt leak as much as old oil. I have also been told that synthetic oils will cause the seals to leak.
