This boat is from 1973 but in really sound condition - except that there is a warping or something in the fiberglass overhead above the head amidships, right below the mast. This boat has been around since 1973. If the mast was going to fall off I think it would've happened. I'm getting it survayed as soon as the weather breaks. I was just wondering what anyone thought.

Chris,
If the deck is spongy, it may be due to delamination of the core from the fiberglass that it is sandwiched between. This is not a very good sign. There is probably a leak somewhere near the mast step. If the leak is not repaired, the core will continue to rot. If the deck isn't repaired, there is the danger of the mast ripping off the cabintop near the mast step due to the weakened laminate. Make sure you point out the spongy area to the surveyor. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Chris,
I have a 1974 CD 25 (#147) and have the same problem. I have a feeling that the deck around the mast step is compromised in some way though I never had boat surveyed (the low price was too good a deal any way I looked at it) and I have sailed in all sorts of weather for two seasons with no problems. I may get it looked at this year.

Just cosmetic
The surveyor said that the overhead shell was just a cosmetic. It has nothing to do with sturtural integrity. told me not to worry about it. He was pretty good too. He had all three aprovals by the various
assioations. The only thing really wrong was the chain plate for the rear main stay was rusted under the lazerette hatch. The boat yard said it would be $275 including the back up which is burried under fiberglass.
