Music to sail Cape Dorys by!!
For all those who either (1) make their own cassettes, (2) make their own CDs (compact dics!!!) or (3) just want ideas of new things to play, I'd like to solicit suggestions on recorded music that CD aficionados like to sail by. Let's break down the suggestions into two categories: A: Sailing theme (songs or music with a title, subject, theme or reference to sailing, ships or the sea) and B: General (Music that may not have such theme or reference, but which you have enjoyed listening to under sail).
I'll compile all the suggestions I get either on the board or by e-mail and I'll post the compilation in a week or two.
I'll start with a few selections including some that my friend Mark Y. put on a CD-R a while back:
Category A
Come Sail Away--Styx
Sailing--Christopher Cross
Gilligan's Island Theme!!
Sloop John B.--Beach Boys
Southern Cross--Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Wooden Ships-Crosby Stills Nash
Ship of Fools--Grateful Dead
Water Music--Handel
Hopefully this is just the beginning!

Music when out in a blow!!
Bill,
Great idea. I'll have to think about the sailing music I like. I know one thing. Anytime I'm caught in 25+ knots of wind, beating head long into some decent waves, with the spray all over the deck and me, Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" plays thrrough my head. I don't know if cueing it up on the CD player would serve any purpose because in those conditions there's enough "music" singing thru the rigging!!
By the way...luckily I don't experience that music too often when sailing!

Re: Music to sail Cape Dorys by!!
Neil Young is one of my favorite artists, and I would add two of his songs to the list:
"Four Strong Winds" which is on the CD "Comes a Time"
and
"Sail Away" which is on the CD "Rust Never Sleeps"
I'm like you -- I've been compiling a list of songs over the years to put together the ultimate sailing tape. And I agree -- most things that Jimmy Buffet puts out would not be inappropriate.

Re: Music to sail Cape Dorys by!!
If I had to pick one song it would be Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
If I had to pick one artist it would definitely be Jimmy Buffet. Favorites for sailing include:
Son of a Son of a Sailor
Cheeseburger in Paradise
Changes in Lattitudes, Changes in Attitudes
Coconut Telegraph
A Pirate Looks at Forty
Margaritaville
One Particular Harbor
My husband says to be sure to include The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot and The Ride of the Valkaries by Wagner

Re: Music to sail Cape Dorys by!!
There's a nice CD by Gordon Bok (SCHOONERS) that would be a candidate for Category A. Its full of ballads and sailing songs. The songs are sung by one or two singers along with a guitar. Some of the songs bring back the lore of sailing the schooners of the past with their white clouds of sails passing the green masts of the great northeast wooded shores.
My wife and kids hate the album. But it's near and dear to me on some nights in port after a visit to town for a fun-filled evening of grog and dancing.

Re: Music to sail Cape Dorys by!!
i find myself rather satisfied with the sound of the chuckling sea. i can't imagine why i'd actually turn on the stereo while sailing. and then, after i endure that fiasco that to me is docking, nothing sounds better than the "ksssssh" of an ice cold beer being opened!

Well, now...let's dip into the classical realm...
How about:
Mendelssohn's "Hebrides" AKA "Fingal's Cave Overture."
Vaughan-Williams' "A Sea Symphony"
The fourth movement of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony ("Pastoral")
...and don't forget Bantock's "A Hebridean Symphony."
And for classical rock fans, try Procol Harum's "A Salty Dog"

History
This question comes from a person who'se two big loves in life (family has been push above these) are sailing and music. He's just getting other ideas for one when he's doing the other. FYI, people on the Hudson knows when Second Chance is out and her Captain is in a good mood by the tunes that seem to carry the length and breath. Now, how to install that subwoofer to get the Hudson to jump w/ the music....
Another entry (and comments)
Recently hearing "The Downeaster Alexa" by Billy Joel, made me think of a fleet sailing North out of Block Island.
FYI, "Ship of Fool" and "Gilligan's Island Theme" are reserved for when Bill Goldsmith and myself do one of our bareboat charters and the Supreme Commanders (the wives) say we must take all the kids. We also reserve "Come Sail Away" as the first sailing song on these charters.
