Re: Speakers in cabin instead

Bob,

We've installed speakers down below in the cabin at the forward ends of each of the two book shelves on our CD32. The combination CD/FM stereo was installed on the shelf above the hanging locker. They're Polyplanar box speakers and they really sound nice. A couple friends that we had aboard (one also a CD owner) commented that our stereo system sounded awesome.

Anyway, we don't usually listen to music while underway. We sail in the New York Harbor area and are usually monitoring 16 on the VHF and either 13 (bridge-to-bridge) or 14 (VTS, port operations) on the handheld to monitor ship traffic. But once anchored, on a mooring or slip, it's nice to switch on the radio or pop in a CD. We can hear it from the cockpit (it has to be kinda loud down below though) without bothering the other boaters in the anchorage or marina -- that is unless we start singing along.

Another option is to make a duplicate of the bottom drop board (it doesn't even have to be the same height of the original board, the shorter the better) for the companionway and install two small speakers on the board. Install the speaker wire to terminate near the companionway. When you want to hear music in the cockpit, insert the dropboard and connect the speaker wires. Just be careful climbing in and out of the companionway.

Captain Stump ...

Congratulations to you sir! Your Autohelm installation has passed the scrutiny of the Real Cape Dory Rules Committee (which meets in my kitchen the first Tuesday of every month). It has been declared a "justifiable upgrade" under Section 047.a, and you are certified as a Real Cape Dory owner.

The Chairman of the Rules Committee (that being myself until such time as I deem it necessary to hold another election) would enjoy sharing a glass of wine with the Captain Commanding. Should you succeed in running the battery of 12-pounders at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, please bear East to the Ida Lewis Yacht Club and inquire after the crew of Ragtime. (Be forewarned that there are two yacht clubs on the east shore of Bretton Cove, the other being the New York Yacht Club. However, this should not cause the prudent mariner much confusion owing to the slightly larger clubhouse of the NYYC and the rather surprising number of Hincklys moored immediately off their pier.)

Alternately, you may continue to communicate via email. (The acceptability of electronic communications is currently under review by the Rules Committee. Please be advised that when a decision is rendered you will be informed via email.)

Yours for a fair tide,

Chris Scheck
