We've installed speakers down below in the cabin at the forward ends of each of the two book shelves on our CD32. The combination CD/FM stereo was installed on the shelf above the hanging locker. They're Polyplanar box speakers and they really sound nice. A couple friends that we had aboard (one also a CD owner) commented that our stereo system sounded awesome.
Anyway, we don't usually listen to music while underway. We sail in the New York Harbor area and are usually monitoring 16 on the VHF and either 13 (bridge-to-bridge) or 14 (VTS, port operations) on the handheld to monitor ship traffic. But once anchored, on a mooring or slip, it's nice to switch on the radio or pop in a CD. We can hear it from the cockpit (it has to be kinda loud down below though) without bothering the other boaters in the anchorage or marina -- that is unless we start singing along.
Another option is to make a duplicate of the bottom drop board (it doesn't even have to be the same height of the original board, the shorter the better) for the companionway and install two small speakers on the board. Install the speaker wire to terminate near the companionway. When you want to hear music in the cockpit, insert the dropboard and connect the speaker wires. Just be careful climbing in and out of the companionway.
