Seat back cushions

Post by Chris Cram »

Since we are in the mood to discuss door fasteners: What methods do you folks use to secure your interior cushions to the seat backs. In my CD 30 I constantly am lifting the seat backs as I use this storage space for all manner of things (tools, spare parts etc.)

Velcro would seem the best... just enough to keep them in place.

The seat back on LIQUIDITY isn't fastened at all. It stays in place by itself until I'm on a stbd tack, then it just flops over. Really not a big deal.

Coquina's were velcroed to hinged panels but I removed the panels and the cushions hold themselves in place because they're tucked snugly up under the shelf. The interior space is greatly improved with the panels out and the settees are much more comfortable. Does anyone know why the panels were there in the first place. I couldn't see a purpose for them.

Chris,
Having recently done several "brisk & choppy" races and finding my cushions all over the cabin, I went to Walmart and bought the most heavy duty industrial grade widest velcro I could find and installed long strips on the back cushions and seat cushions as well. Because it didn't stick as well as I wanted to the cushion backs I used a cloth & vinyl glue on the corners of the velcro backing and now all is well. It's tight, but I can lift and latch my seatbacks with the cushions in place. Good luck!

Chris ---this had alway been the problem with all my vinyl-velco projects. The adhesive works fine until you need to separate the velcro. I am curious about the glue you used--do you remember the brand?

On "Fiddler's Green" hinged seat backs have been removed. Seat back Cushions and Mattresses each have a single sea strap with a buckle mounted in the middle. The bottom strap for the seat back and the outboard strap for the mattress are anchored with the same bolt.

Only need them when it starts to breeeze up as the backs usually stay in place. The straps on the mattresses are extra long and serve as hold downs for other things. It s a great place to keep the current charts when not on deck. Straps are 1 inch wide but If I were to install them again I would use strapping at least 2 inches wide as the buckles would be easier to handle.

Check the archives, I posted a description on the method I used in our 30 utilizing snaps. The cushions stay put, period.

I'll go to the boat and check and let you know later....but you're right, when you first want to separate the velcro something gives...thus the glue. Will get back to you.
