engine kill switch

Post by Larry Mace »

This weekends casualty was the engine kill switch. From what I can tell the cable appears to have parted at the switch(pull lever). The cable is still attached to the engine but does not pull through (I am guessing something on the other end is hitting the cable housing). Does anyone know how to disconnect the pull lever? Mine appears to be the original one that may be a yanmar push/pull switch over a teak plate that is screwed in. Removing the screws does nothing and trying to turn the base of the switch is not working? Any thoughts on how to fix this. My engine is a Westerbeke 27 that replaced the original engine.
Thanks

Just replaced the Yanmar push/pull cable assembly this past weekend. If your cable is loosened at your engine's kill switch assembly, you should be able to unscrew your teak plate and pull the entire cable housing and cable out as a single unit---be sure to tie a light line or cable to the engine side of the cable unit to help in fishing it back through your engine compartment when installing the new unit. Order your replacement cable from Torresen Marine Diesel (u should be able to find their website at http://shop.marinedieseldirect.com). They turned my order around in 2 days....$19.95 for the cable assembly. The only problem you could run into would be the fact that the kill cable might be tiewrapped to existing electrical cables, in which case you get to do some spelunking into the engine area head first.
It seems that a twice a year shot of WD40 or Liquid Wrench helps to keep the push/pull cable running freely.
