Is the light blue color on the early Ty's under or on top of the outer layer of gel coat? The previous owner painted a layer of dark blue that is obviously on top (because it rubs off sometimes) and I want to remove it.

Early Ty Non-Skid Question

Re: Early Ty Non-Skid Question
I believe that the non-skid is on top of the outer layer. I had the identical problem with the '71 (#189)Ty that I bought about 10 years ago. The non-skid was painted by the previous owner a very dark blue both the cockpit sole and the foredeck. I sanded away as much of this dark color as I could then applied an exterior latex floor paint which I tinted the white base coat to a light blue and added a small quantity of commercially obtained, very fine sand marketed as a non-skid paint additive. It went on very easily and has stood up over the years remarkably well in terms of wear and lack of fading. I touch up every few years in heavy traffic areas like the cockpit sole. I have a light blue non-skid now that very closely resembles the original and is easy to maintain. I suppose an alternative to sanding would be the use of a marine chemical stripper that is safe for use on fiberglass.Marino Curati wrote: Is the light blue color on the early Ty's under or on top of the outer layer of gel coat? Re: Early Ty Non-Skid Question
definitely on top. sands off easy, but be prepared to have some sand thru spots if you redo the non-skid. i redid mine this past fall/spring and sanded thru in a couple of spots (as have others i hear) where the gelcoat was not that thick. i painted mine with two coats of petit easypoxy over two coats of their undercoater/primer. i used sandtone (beige) as the color - never liked the blue and always admired the newer tys with the beige non-skid.
