Merriman pedestal

Post by Ann and David Brownlee »

Like most (all?) CD31's, ours has Merriman pedestal steering. The company is caput, and Edson parts are not interchangeable. We need some help. Does anyone have an assembly diagram? Any advice on the general problem of finding replacements? Or help with our specific challenge: replacing the shoes on the wheel brake?

Thanks!

ann and david

i have the same pedestal and as far as i know there is no chance of finding parts - my wheel brake is caput because the threads for its handle are damaged so i tie the wheel up to the cleats on top of the cockpit coamings when i'm moored - when moving i use my electric autopilot as a wheel brake (infrequently) -

i have looked into replacing the whole thing with an Edson pedestal etc. and they will fax you a quote - it's expensive and doesn't seem worth it to me

i did have the steering cables replaced because i had pulled the rudder, but i wouldn't have done it if i hadn't had to pull the rudder

regarding steering in general on the 31, i installed a monitor windvane and it is the best piece of equipment on the boat and, as their literature says, it makes you a better sailor

good luck

I have a few leads you guys and Len might want to contact. They are used equipment consignment shops and one surplus outlet that have mountains of stuff. They may have some Merriman components laying around and if not there is a fairly decent chance they may be able to lead you in the right direction.

Here's the list:

SAILOR'S EXCHANGE
222 W. King St.
St. Augustine, Fl. 32064
Mon - Fri 9:00 - 5:00
Sat - 9:00 - 2:00
PH: 904/808-0667
FAX: 904/808/7070
www.sailors-exchange.com
E-mail: sailex@aug.com

THE NAUTICAL TRADER
110 E. Colonia Ln.
Nokomis, Fl. 34275
PH: 941/488-0766
FAX: 941/484-0076
www.nauticaltrader.net

DON'S SALVAGE (Don Thweatt) A must visit if in the St. Petersburg area
(Only surplus gear, no consignment)
5801 126th Ave North
Clearwater, Fl. (actually located between Clearwater and St. Pete)
PH: 813/576-8577

Don may have components or complete Merriman pedestals (new but old) since he used to purchase a lot of the dead inventory from Morgan Yachts. Morgan used the Merriman steering systems for several years). He also purchased dead inventory from Gulfstar, Endeavour, Irwin and I think Island Packet and Com-Pac and a lot of others. Anyone looking for hard to find stuff of any kind should contact Don's. He has buildings and buildings full of stuff plus a huge yard full (couple acres), anything you can think of.

Another possible source is Sailorman in Ft. Lauderdale. I don't have their contact info in front of me but they have a website so you can just run a search to locate them.

Hope this helps you find what you need.

Dear Anne/David,

You won't like this response, but back in May when I was struggling to replace the transmission cable in my CD31 I went on the same search - even ordered an Edson part thinking that my pedestal had to be an Edson, but as you know it wasn't. I accumulated a mountain of matreial on the subject and somewhere in that is the drawings that you want. I will try to find then for you. I was inside the pedestal for 2 weeks at the time, and could examine the brake. I had to have some parts worked on at a local machine shop. Sometimes it is more apparent when you are looking at the parts in position for real and not in a drawing.

I will try to find the drawings for you, though.

The monitor windvane is a self-steering device. See the link below for lots more info.

michael, ken etc.

the monitor can be adapted to almost any boat (by changing the four stainless steel tubes that hold the basic unit on) - at least one other CD31 owner (in california) has a monitor - it's so strongly built i routinely use it to climb in and out of the dinghy - it is the only piece of equipment on my boat that has never broken (i hope i haven't offended the godswhobreakequipment by mentioning that) - i sound like a salemsman for the company, but it is a marvel and fun to sail with - it has also taught me not to over-canvas or sheet my sails in too hard
