ok this is probably a silly question for most boaters but i wanted to know if i could lengthen the exhaust tube for a 2 cycle outboard so that it exited under water. mine is a few inches above the water. is there a chance of sucking water up the tube during starting or something??
thanks

2cycle outboard exhaust tube

Re: 2cycle outboard exhaust tube
Ditto. There used to be a company that made hose kits for the otherwise hoseless OMC motors, making it possible to run them in the well with the lid closed.

Re: 2cycle outboard exhaust tube
The usual reason for the above-water exhaust is to minimize back pressure for easier starting. The regular exhaust under water has a little more back pressure. If you transfer the above-water exhaust to an underwater position you will lose that little advantage. If you have been starting ok, the advantage was not significant. You could just as easily plug the above-water exhaust with a rope tail or wooden dowel. That way you can easily unplug it for starting if that becomes necessary. We ran ours that way for years with no problems.dan wrote: ok this is probably a silly question for most boaters but i wanted to know if i could lengthen the exhaust tube for a 2 cycle outboard so that it exited under water...

This was a big topic on this board a couple of years ago. The main reason for wanting to re-route the exhaust is to keep the fumes from fouling the air in the lazerette, and allowing you to run under power with the lid closed. You don't need to run the exhaust hose under water, just run it out the hole at the bottom of the lazerette and fasten it to the bottom edge of the transom ABOVE the water line. This way you get clean air in the lazerette and reduced back pressure on the exhaust. I haven't done this, but those who have claim it works.
