I'm doing some selective refinishing on the interior of our CD33. What do you call the laminated blond edge trim that caps off the cutaway bulkheads forward of the galley sink and the nav table? What kind of wood is that ... ash or holly maybe? I spent literally 3 hours sanding each piece down to the raw wood and I plan to use MINWAX Helmsman Urethane on it. However, even after all that sanding there are little tiny black specks in the grain of the wood. When I put some varnish on it looked like pepper under glass, so I stopped. Is it mold spores? It certainly is not steel wool, I didn't use anything except sandpaper. How would I kill mold? Should I use TEKA A & B? Acetone? Laundry bleach? I'd sure appreciate any advice. Hope you're not all on the cruise. I couldn't make it ... my varnishing isn't done.

Mold spores??

Re: Mold spores??
As you suspected, it's mold spores engrained in the wood. To kill it off, use laundry bleach and a paper towel. Just dab in some bleach and rub it around..assuming that there is no finish over the mold at this time. This will kill them off if the bleach contacts the colonies. Once done, dry asap, using a hairdryer to augment natural drying, then coat with your varnish product's first coat.
Good Luck!
