Older Typhoon spreader assembly...need help

Post by Chris »

From all the information I can gather, there are two iterations of the spreader base assembly for the Typhoon. The older type consists of a mast tang that is thru-bolted in two places to one another sandwiching the mast. The tang is angled at the bottom where it has a hole for the lower shroud to connect. Somehow the spreader connects to this tang between the two thru bolts, but I don't know how - yet. I think the other spreader base assembly is an aluminum casting that is fixed to the mast.

Mine is the tang setup & here's my problem. I'm pretty sure the previous owner replaced this tang setup with something homegrown. As a result, I'm having a hard time finding out the correct part number, dimension, etc. so that I can replace it with the correct tang. I've called RigRite & they tell me to get them a part # or dimensions.

Somebody help me beat this dead horse!

Thanks!
Chris

Chris,

Contact the rigrite web site at www.rigrite.com. Cruise the site, you should be able to find the setup for your mast and spreaders. As you probably already know, rigrite is NOT a lot of help on the phone...go figure...

I couldn't find the part on their website!

I've checked Rigrite's website & was unable to find the part that matches. Of course if I knew what the orignal part looked like, that would help. What's on my boat now looks like a standard tang of some sort that's been modified to "fit" my Ty.

Ok...trying to do this w/eyes closed to picture fitting. My mast is a '74. Memory says (memory hah!) that there is a round stub that is a snug fit the size of the ID of the spreader. The spreader fits over the stub and is attached by a long cotter pin(?). The stub is long enough that the spreader angle is set by their configuration.
Can tell you my tangs are Schaefer 1" x 3 or 4" with 1/4" hole for the clevis pin at the lower end. Pretty sure the tangs are bolted with a 5/16" through bolt with the stubs attached just above. However cannot picture the stubs exact shape and mounting.
And actually having said that since the boom is Schaefer the mast may also be theirs. If so they may have in their archives this fitting's specs.
Sorry can't tell you more.

Mine is a 73, THE SPREADER ATTACHMENT IS A 1/4" CLEVIS PIN RATHER THAN A COTTER PIN. BOTH THE UPPER AND THE LOWER TANGS ARE THE SAME SIZE. THE STUD THE SPREADER IS ATTACHED TO IS ITSELF ATTACHED (WELDED)TO A FLAT PLATE WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE MAST BY THE TWO THROUGHBOLTS. THE UPPER THROUGHBOLT APPEARS TO BE 1/4", THE LOWER APPEARS TO BE 5/16". IT IS LARGER AT ANY RATE (AND IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE THROUGHBOLT FOR THE UPPER TANG). THE LOWER TANG IS ATTACHED BY THE LOWER OF THESE TWO THROUGHBOLTS. THE TANGS ARE SHAEFER SO WOULD ASSUME THE SPREADER "STUD" ATTACHMENT IS ALSO. THE MAST IS A SHAEFER PART. MY MAST IS SITTING OUTSIDE HERE AND APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL IF YOU NEED ANY MORE INFO.
