Upgrading from a Typhoon - Advice?

Post by Joel »

I'm thinking of moving up to a larger boat from my Ty Weekender. I'm so far only a day sailor and want more stability and room in the cockpit. I may occasionally weekend, but I'm not so sure about that, since the accommodations in the Ty are more like sleeping in a pup tent than what I like to do. I'd like to be able to go out for the day with 4 or 6 in comfort.

It seems that in most larger boats, the extra room goes into the cabin, not the cockpit. Someone suggested another Alberg design, the Pearson Commander, as a boat with a large cockpit.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

The Commander might do the trick. She's the daysailer version of the Pearson Ariel, I think. Similar in size and concept is the daysailer version of the Soverel 27 (a keel/centerboarder). Smaller is the Ensign, the daysailer version of the Pearson Electra

I mean the ca. 1970 Soverel 27 daysailer, not the 1987 boat now listed on YachtWorld. DB

So far I agree with the advice you're getting. I've owned an Ensign; best sailing boat I've owned, including the TY. I've looked at Commanders, and that would be my choice due to the possibility of weekending. Another (hard to find) boat I'd consider is the Bristol 27 daysailer. HUGE cockpit, but with some accomodations.
Good luck.
