The Return of Larry DeMers!!

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Larry,
Welcome back!! While you were sailing for 3 weeks through the Apostle Islands, I know I was going through "withdrawal" ...not having your posts to read! I hope your voyage was both enjoyable and memorable. I also hope that your video project came off without a hitch. When you're ready, perhaps you'll give us a little taste from DeLaMer's logbook covering the last 3 weeks.
Again...welcome back!

It's amazing how fast and slow it all went! It's also amazing how out of tune I am with my house, neighborhood, the roads, the car, traffic.. I'll work on a story or two for you after I dive into the bills for a couple hours.

The "big" adventure will be coming up in 5 weeks, and this past three weeks was a shakedown trip for that advnenture. We're sailing to Isle Royale on Lake Superior's northern shore, and spending one week in transit (both ways included), and one week on Isle Royale's southern coastline, then Thunder Bay, Ontario's barrier islands, including The Sleeping Giant, and other remote locations.
The interesting thing about Isle Royale is the incredible difficulty in navigating the area. Shelves and rock ledges, reefs just under the surface, entrances that require a series of precise 45 degree turns in 50 ft. to avoid the rocks, swift currents..then tranquility second to a remote So. Pacific Island..bomb proof harbor with a steep to shore..tie a bow line to a tree, and throw a stern anchor..360 deg. protection. etc. Nearest town is across 40-50 miles of Superior.

I have a set of overhead photos of the worst passes and bays, so reef avoidance will be easier, but still...will be paying of Boat/US insurance before leaving..;^)

But this past trip was a test of our two years of upgrading the power generation and storage, monitoring and distribution; New Loose Footed main and staysail; new refrigeration with a super sprayed foam insulation job, and a homebuilt acrylic freezer section (thought of at 2am one morning) that actually works..all for 16-19 Ah / day; New WAAS GPS tied into the radar and TriData instruments via Seatalk and NMEA networks, and of course the human interaction of two married people (34 years June 24th) in a small but deeply loved 30 ft. Cape Dory. It worked well after ironing out the wrinkles in all categories!

So let me get settled in and I'll post something tomorrow.

I just wanted to toss a congratulation your way for tour recent anniversary, and hopes for you to sail through many more years navigating the sometimes choppy seas of marriage.

Hehe, well, we found that we have to work at keeping the love free of complications (unresolved arguments, hurting words etc)..the rest follows naturally if honesty is high on both partners list of priority. It helps that we share all our experiences thru life..canoeing, backpacking & now sailing. it helps when you have an "interesting experience" (like the bear that chased us for two miles around North Temperance Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area..unil we dropped our packs, a bit at a time..etc.) to have somone who understands when you just say.."North Temperance..wow...".

Hey Ed, the guys you helped out on the canal at lock 26 are still reliving those days when you brought welcome help and friendship. The boat is getting prepped in Bergan, Norway for the return sail via the Canaries, the Caribbean, East Coast, St Lawrence Seaway and Lake Superior. Two of the members will do the crossing with a pick-up hand when they get to Ireland.
Thanks Again for an inspiring act of kindness.

Cheers!
