while working on my fathers boat, I noticed a bump in the hull where the structural reinforcements for the shrouds are located. The bump only appears to be on the starboard side of the hull. Is this okay? any help would be appreciated.

I believe the bump is evidence that the mast is compressing the deck in turn causing the deck to lift up in that area. Unfortunately this is one of the few weak points of the older Typhoons. I think Cape Dory began beefing up the the deck adding reinforcement under the mast on the brown deck boats from 1979-1980 onwards. As far how to fix it, I'll leave that suggestion to the experts -- I don't know how serious the problem is. I know some owners have installed compression posts to help prevent/control deck compression. One was installed on mine (at the expense of the porta-potty) even though my Ty has the beefed up deck.
