Removing Teak Parts
OK - Now this is probably a really dumb question. I want to remove the handrails on my CD to strip the bottoms and re-do. How do they come off? It appears that they are screwed in from the top and the screws are bunged over. How do you get the bungs out? I just don't want to screw anything up. thanks

drill a small hole in the wood plug & insert a screw. the screw will pull the plug out.John D wrote: OK - Now this is probably a really dumb question. Re: Removing Teak Parts
the new plugs are glued in place with any waterproof glue. They will be longer than the hole so must be cut off and sanded before finishingJohn D wrote:Thanks! ps do you glue the new ones in with anything special or are they just a "force fit"?John doyle wrote:drill a small hole in the wood plug & insert a screw. the screw will pull the plug out.John D wrote: OK - Now this is probably a really dumb question. Re: Removing Teak Parts
I suggest you glue new bungs in with varnish so you can get them out again if needed. Carefully sand each bung so it's a close fit because if you drive them in hard the wood may split, especially in handrails. Give them a couple of days to dry before cutting them off, though. Trim off the bungs about 1/16" above surface and sand down with 80-grit paper on a block.

Re: Removing Teak Parts
i use a small dab of caulk to hold the bungs in. this helps waterproof the hole to keep water from following the screw. caulk the screhole also when reinserting the screws.

!!!YIKES!! do that and you'll NEVER get them out again. Get the correct size and they'll swell up to fit tight enough. The varnish or Cetol or whatever you use to finish the rail will keep them in place.

Re: Removing Teak Parts
Why would you remove the handrails to refinish them? I'm as compulsive as anyone (I spent 3 weekends refinishing the cockpit coaming on a CD33) but even I see no reason to risk cabin leaks by removing handrails. I use sandpaper and TEKA A & B. Just mask around the base of the handrails so the sandpaper won't scratch the glass. Then wrap the sandpaper around the rail and rub vigorously. Works fine.
