PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
Captains Commanding,
Does anyone know the PHRF rating for a Cape Dory 32? I've checked all appropriate links, and can only find ratings for the CD-30C (234), CD-31 (219), and CD-33 (212). Is it fair to extropolate between the rating of 219 for the CD-31 and 212 for the CD-33 and assume that the rating would be close to 215.5 for a CD-32?
An UN-NAMED Captain Commanding, is I believe assuming that a CD-32 WOULD NOT be handicapped during the Napatree to Block race because no rating exists. Now, this will be, I believe, a fun race, but come on!
Any comments would be appreciated....

An "unnamed captain" you say. How many CD-32s did CD produce? I don't think there is a PHRF rating for any boat with tanbark sails!D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: Captains Commanding,

Re: PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
Dave;
The only way PHRF ratings get on the charts is if a skipper applies to a handicapping organization. Apparently CD32's have never done this in the U.S.. I checked nationally with USSAILING the governing organization and can find no handicap for the 32. Normally a sanctioned USSailing Race would require a handicap certificate for the boat in question (read..pay some more money), but since I believe you are referring to the CD BI race you will have to get dispensation from the race comittee. BTW the PHRF ratings on most charts you will look at is for a base boat. A certificate will be for a specific boat with adjustments +/- based on any departure from base configuration. Actually I think hanging on a a base is the best way, especially if your boat is sooo..much faster...if you require I can put you in touch with the chief measurer for ECSA and see based on measurements your 32 would base out at.
Cheers.

Re: PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
I actually calculated the phrf for a cd32. I also did the calculations for many other cape dories. The numbers of the others agreed with the posted phrfs in several databases, so I believe the 32 one I calculated. (not for tan bark cutters, though).
Unfortunately, I'm away on travel and don't have my computer handy with the number, but I'll post it when I return.

Ok, here are my calculation results. They are based on the specs I found in this website. I've included results of several cape dories which you can use as a comparison. I know the 27 matches the various databases I've found, although I race with a 232 PHRF on the 27. One database that I have bookmarked is:
http://vent.neb.com/benner/PFiles/base.html
I'll calculate the 31,36, and 40 when I get the specs of these boats.
boat...my calc...database at above site
cd27....242.........243
cd28....226.........219
cd30c...223.........207
cd31................198
cd32....188
cd33....187
cd330...176
cd36................180
cd40................168
Remember, PHRF are adjusted for various fleet conditions empirically determined. My calcs are based on math alone. (there are also adjustments for props, spinnakers, etc.)

Re: Neat, now there will be no welching...
Captain Loewenstein,
Thank you Sir, for eliminating any misunderstanding by that "Un-Named" skipper with a CD-32. I don't really think PHRF ratings will be used in the Napatree to Block race, but I haven't heard yet from the race committee chair.
One can only wait to see...

Re: PHRF ratings -- right on for the 33
Bob,
You're right on with the 33. We just gor our PHRF certificate for Maggie Rose & it is 195, which is +9 with the above deck roller furling drum & 3 blade prop. Jo

Re: PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
Captain Stump (aka NTO),
In doing a little more research, I see that one of our webmasters placed PHRF info on http://www.toolworks.com/capedory/phrf.htm.
I also note that my calculations agree with with her (oops) postings of the 33 and the 330. I believe this would lend credance to my calculation of the 32, although (again) not for tan bark cutters.

Re: PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
Bob,
Would my CD32 Cutter have the same PHRF rating as a sloop? Our cutter-rigged 32 carries a yankee and staysail and its performance would not be the same as sloop with a 100% jib or larger.

Re: PHRF ratings for a Cape Dory 32...
Cathy,
Your cutter would very likely have a different PHRF. The sail area is part of the formula. I used the specs from the website for each boat I calculated. For what it's worth, let me know your sail area and I'll plug that in. My 32 has a large genoa, but I did not use that additional area in my calcs.
